Elgar: Enigma Variations, Britten: Young Person's Guide - Paavo Järvi          (13 of 18 found this review helpful)

This is a stunning recording, the closest thing I know to being in a concert hall for a memorable night of music. I delayed in buying this because of the negative comments of some reviewers on this website, but having read David Hurwitz's glowing 10/10 review on the Classics Today website ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 2 - Wiener Philharmoniker/Kaplan        (6 of 7 found this review helpful)

I held back from buying this until recentlty partly because of some negative criticisms in the music press and on this website; but I am glad I took the plunge because this is a superb performance - idiomatic and extremely moving. It may not be the same as Klemperer, Solti, Mehta, Abbado etc but it ... more

This is a superb performance, caught live at the Musikverein in Vienna last September at a single concert. It is not 'stitched' together from various 'takes' and it has tremendous integrity, coherence and the excitement of a live performance. I much prefer it to Chailly's recent Decca recording. ... more
Vivaldi: Flute Concerti, Op. 10 - Rothert        (4 of 5 found this review helpful)

Top-notch performances of these Vivaldi concertos by the Cologne Chamber orchestra, full of vitality. Excellent recorded sound, with a very rich and well-defined bass. A real treat for Vivaldi lovers!

Trebles should be livelier and the bass more prominent. This ... more

I have the same forces in another Exon disc, Respighi's Church Windows, Belkis Queen of Sheba and Belfagor OVCL 00216, and that has no true centre channel, only ambience. Although it claims to be a 5 channel recording, it is clearly enhanced stereo only. Pip440 ... more
