Giuliani: Guitar Concertos - Edoardo Catemario        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
  January 30, 2009

Based on the first review of this disc I ordered it out of curiosity. Now I have listened to it twice, I felt an additional voice of approval was appropriate. I found it exciting; vibrant; and one of the finest classical guitar recordings in my collection, equal to the Rodrigo works. The fact ... more
Dvorak: Cello Concerto, Symphonic Variations - Wispelwey, Fischer          (8 of 12 found this review helpful)
  November 13, 2007

This is a recording from a concert in in Budapest, December 2006. We are most fortunate that Wispelwey, Fischer, and Channel Classics continue to produce such fine SACD recordings at a time when others seem to be reverting to inferior recording methods. The performance and recording are both first ... more
Saint-Saëns: Africa - Simon        (1 of 4 found this review helpful)
  August 2, 2007

Another nice surprise. Many new Saint-Saens pieces with which I was not familiar including the delightful Africa-Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra. Castor's review is quite on point. The performances were perfect; first rate, and I found the recording also well done. I strongly recommend this for ... more
Dvorak: Symphony No. 8, The Wild Dove, The Noon Witch - Kreizberg          (9 of 10 found this review helpful)
  July 16, 2007

Castor's thorough review caught my attention, hence I purchased this superb disc. Amidst all the talk of the demise of multichannel hi rez music it is a delight to find that such elegant, vibrant, thoughtful releases are still being issued. What immediately caught my ear was the full, precise sound ... more
Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker - Vedernikov          (8 of 13 found this review helpful)
  December 21, 2006

Christmas came early today when I received this from jpc. I suspect this is the Nutcracker Ballet by which all others will be judged - past and future. It comes from the Boshoi Theatre orchestra, and chorus, and has that element of "the source" which is beyond question. Performed with such ... more

Stereophile "Recording of the Month" (December)
December 13, 2008
Kal: You column was the only thing I enjoyed in Stereophile in the two years I subscribed to it. I also voted last month. I did not renew my subscription. I vote by putting my money where my interest lies. And I purchase a lot of multichannel hi rez albums. You can tell JA his magazine wasn't worth the $18 subscription fee. He can live in the past; ... more
Discussion: July 6th, Live at Birdland New York - The Great Jazz Trio, Hank Jones
January 6, 2008
I think you were lucky. I tried Amazon and got the "preorder" screen - and no less expensive discs listed. As for other reviews, Robt C. Lang has touted this at audioasylum, and barb has one today at SA-CD.net. I have the Chesky Hank Jones album, which is excellent and priced reasonably. ... more
Discussion: July 6th, Live at Birdland New York - The Great Jazz Trio, Hank Jones

I keep finding wonderful reviews of this disc. Is is possible to buy it for other than $54? The highest price I have ever seen for any disc - and seems to be absolutely ridiculous. ... more
PENTATONE THREAD
December 9, 2007
In reviewing the wonderful Pentatone Nutcracker release, last year, I note almost all of us are yearning for the same treatment - release- of Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. Any chance of this? ... more
Is Tacet giving up on SACD?
November 15, 2007
As an early DVD-A purchaser, and later SACD when the multichannel players came out, I early on purchased almost everything in both formats I could find, in stores, and on line. I have all the Tacet releases - and found them uniformly the best available in recording, and in quality performances. Their chamber music recordings especially. They make ... more
