Shostakovich: Cello Works - Kanka, Klepac        (7 of 8 found this review helpful)

When I played in my university's orchestra way back when, my friends and I used to enjoy telling viola jokes. Examples: "How do you keep your expensive violin from being stolen? Keep it in a viola case!" "How do you get 10 oboists to play in tune? Shoot 9 of them. How do you get 10 violists to play ... more
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 13 - Wigglesworth        (10 of 10 found this review helpful)

The series of Wigglesworth/Shostakovich recordings spans backwards into the pre-SA-CD era, with very good recordings on RBCD of symphonies 5,6,7,10 and an absolutely stunning, intense recording of symphony 14 that remains one of my two favored recordings of that piece (along with Rostropovich's ... more
Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde - Arming        (5 of 5 found this review helpful)

There are a number of things I enjoy about this disc. I think the orchestra plays well, and the multichannel engineering captures this live concert honestly. Though there isn't as good a sense of a listening space as I've heard on other recordings, the imaging of the orchestra itself is quite good, ... more
Shostakovich: Complete String Quartets Vol. 1 - Mandelring Quartett        (11 of 11 found this review helpful)

Well, at least for now, this is my favorite SA-CD, for a number of reasons. Of the three quartets presented here, only #2 was previously available on SA-CD, with the Rosalyra Quartet on Artegra (coupled with #8). Best I can tell, the Artegra recording was the only previous recording of any of the ... more
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 11 - Caetani        (10 of 10 found this review helpful)

I greatly enjoyed this. I haven't heard the Pletnev, yet, which Polly Nomial has reviewed for the site. The Rostropovich, Lazarev, and Kitajenko readings are all in my player, and if forced to do so, I'd probably pick Kitajenko because of the sound and the orchestra. The sound on Caetani's is close ... more

SACD Player and AV Options
May 12, 2012
It made a much bigger difference back in the early days of SACD. Back then, we didn't have DSD over HDMI (I'm not even sure there WAS HDMI then, or if so, it was in infancy); the _only_ option when I started listening to SACDs was analog multichannel out from the SACD player to analog multichannel ins on the receiver. Since the receivers couldn't ... more

Congratulations -- I think you'll really enjoy listening to classical SA-CDs. This website is a great resource of people and information. You'll probably get a number of different answers to your questions, but here's my take. First, yes, the last couple of crops of Sony BD players output DSD over HDMI, including multichannel DSD. I haven't had ... more
