  I have been a lifelong audiophile. I started collecting brochures and catalogs when I was 12 (c. 1969), attended my first CES at 17 and have always loved music as well as being fascinated by good home reproduction. I played brass instruments (trumpet, baritone, trombone) from grade school and on to college. I have always spent far more on software than hardware.

I see Tomita's version of the Planets has been recommended, but not the original orchestral version. The best recordings (Boult, etc.) are extremely expensive, but the Chandos 5.0 SACD: [t=6959] Is quite fine. The music depicts each planet in turn, starting with Mercury and working outward. One of my all time favorite pieces of music. ... more

Far from average, I'm pretty sure: Classical: 7714 RBCDs, 12 DVD-As and 405 SACDs Jazz: 1007 RBCDs, 3 DVD-As and 73 SACDs Rock: 1130 RBCDs, 78 DVD-As and 150 SACDs For a total of 628 SACDs according to the database. I also have a few Blu-ray audio discs. ... more
