Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 - Kertesz    (10 of 15 found this review helpful)

If there is any recording that I would spend extra for, this is probably it. I know the $60 price tag leaves many gasping in horror. Is this what we've come to? $60 for something that is a little over $30 in Japan? Well it is worth it! I might go out of my way to pay the same if Esoteric finally ... more
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique - Paray      (8 of 8 found this review helpful)

Oh my God! Wow!!! Are you ready to be terrorized by a March that literally makes you feel as if you ARE the person being marched to the scaffold or a Witch's Sabbath that makes you feel as if Witches are right there harassing you? For the longest time I merely listened to the Symphonie Fantastique ... more
Smetana: Ma Vlast - Susskind      (7 of 7 found this review helpful)

I have been waiting for this recording for months to come out on MFSL. I ordered it through Amazon and it kept being put on backorder until finally in August it came out. Finally! As for the recording. I have listened to it a couple of times now and, while not up there with the best of the really ... more
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade - Reiner      (13 of 15 found this review helpful)

I have been waiting for this recording to grace the SACD format since the inception of the Living Stereo recordings and I am in no way disappointed in the recording or the performance. It is a three channel recording and as such we get a wonderfully full and detailed account of one of classical ... more
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6, Francesca da Rimini - Neeme Järvi        (6 of 8 found this review helpful)

After listening to this about 5 times, I feel I can now give my thoughts on the matter. It is generally accepted that whenever a conductor comes to a work they have some idea how they want to conduct it. I'm sure Jarvi came to the Tchaikovsky 6 with some previous conceptions on how to proceed. I'm ... more

And in 20 years we will have something that shows SACD to be something "incomplete." You just said the Reiner XRCD of Mahler's 4th offers clarity and transparency. Compared to what? Compared to the previous RBCD release? And I would say the XRCD also provides richness of tone (although perhaps not the elusive "warmth"). All that shows is that my ... more

Your purchase proves nothing when it comes to the quality of recent RBCD releases; it just proves that SACD sounded better than the RBCD layer--to you. The same recording, however, remastered using 1980s RBCD equipment and then 2010 equipment would sound infinitely different (and worse). The 2010 equipment technology to make that recording would be ... more

Which is affirmation of what many all know: RBCD has improved since the early days and SACD improves on that to provide even more enjoyment of music by improving on the overall resolution. The argument that all CDs (from the early 80s to now) should all be judged with equal disdain by some because of the format alone, is bogus. I like this ... more
