Spyro Gyra: Wrapped in a Dream          (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
  July 18, 2009

It's refreshing to find another "real" surround album, given that the great majority of engineers choose to deliver ambience-only surround channels (many of which are pretty much indistinguishable from the "surround" settings on our receivers). On my car system (where I have a center channel ... more
Cameron Carpenter: Revolutionary        (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  January 11, 2009

If you don't like Virgil Fox and never liked theatre organ (I do occasionally and harbor fond memories of an overwhelming diaphone in an organ installed in an Armory in Cleveland, Ohio), then you won't like this SACD. Me, I'm delighted! All the hype about Cameron Carpenter being a maverick is ... more
Beethoven: Complete String Quintets - Quartetto d’archi di Venezia        (5 of 6 found this review helpful)
  October 10, 2008

I'm happy to have this "complete" edition, though in reality two of Beethoven's three string (viola)quintets are re-workings of previous works. According to the liner notes these re-workings amount to considerable improvement over the original works (the Septet for strings and winds and a Trio ... more
Phantômes, An Organ Spectacular - Harald Feller        (2 of 8 found this review helpful)
  November 12, 2007

The format of this disc is 5.0 (no subwoofer channel). Given that my main SACD player gives no indication of which channels are active (actually, none of them do; is there a surround sound meter on the market?) I wanted to verify this before posting a review here. A gentleman at Oehms Classics was ... more
Bouzignac: Motets - Saxon Vocal Ensemble        (5 of 5 found this review helpful)
  October 6, 2007

When I first read about Tacet's "Real Surround" technique, with separate parts of the chorus dedicated to individual loudspeakers, even I (a very liberal thinker with regard to deploying surround channels) was dubious. However, the results in this case are simply gorgeous. The "Real Surround" ... more

HRAudio.net - need to be able to search for multichannel titles
August 8, 2015
I'm not sure if HRAudio.net is meant to replace SA-CD.net, but it really needs to have a selection for "multichannel" recordings before I'll be able to use the site. By the way, I really want to see "multichannel" recordings for BOTH SA-CD and Blu-ray (or even DVD-Audio, which some people still think SHOULD have been better than SA-CD and still ... more
Discussion: Billy Joel: Piano Man
May 1, 2011
Really too bad bad MoFi has decided to issue no more surround recordings, even though they're still releasing SACDs. I just looked and Piano Man was originally released in quadraphonic form, so there would be a minimum amount of remixing. Unfortunately, the 5.1 release of "The Stranger" on SACD has Joel's voice virtually isolated in the center ... more
Number crunching SACD releases (rate steady over long stretches of time)
March 6, 2011
Sorry for the waffling title, but I haven't taken a snapshot in a long time, and the rate of new releases may well have spiked and then gone down. "Lying with statistics" aside, I was happy to see that over long stretches of time the SACD release rate (1.68 per day since the last sample) SEEMS to have held up worldwide. This in spite of the fact ... more
Finding all Concord Music Group SACDs (including Telarc)
March 20, 2010
http://www.concordmusicgroup.com/search/?Quick_Search=SACD ...will show all the Concord SACDs (246 as far as I can tell), though I haven't found a "show SACDs" link on the Concord Music website. I created this link by visiting the (much simplified) telarc.com, pressing the SACD link there (195 SACDs) and then editing the address line to remove ... more
Mobile Fidelity not to issue any more surround discs
March 19, 2010
I sent a message at the Mobile Fidelity website a while back and heard back this week. I had sent them feedback that it was hard to tell which albums were recorded in surround. The disappointing reply came this week that they will not be issuing any more surround recordings at all. They =are= issuing older material, some of which was already ... more
