In 1960, teenager Al Kooper went to see a Maynard Ferguson concert in the Big Apple and was immediately smitten by the power of both the big band and its horn arrangements. The lesson he walked away with was that he wanted to front a band as loud as "this one." After joining the Blues Project he ... more
Clark Terry: One on One        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
  October 29, 2014

The simply amazing trumpeter, Clark Terry has taken a unique approach to this singular jazz outing by including fourteen jazz legends performing duets on 14 selections captured in Chesky's minimalist miking technique approach. Duetting with the likes of Monty Alexander, Geri Allen, Kenny Baron, ... more
Hiromi Uehara - The Trio Project "Move"      (4 of 4 found this review helpful)

As sort of a companion review to Marpow's Hiromi's Another Mind review, I offer a true DSD recording released on Universal's SHM~SACD format by piano virtuoso Hiromi with a stellar line~up of Anthony Jackson on contrabass guitar and the great Simon Philips on Drums. Since I have ALL of Hiromi's ... more

The Planets Op 32 for Piano! I've experienced it performed on organ, and of course multi orchestral renderings but was hardly prepared for the "reimagining" of pianists Eva~Marie Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi's performance for four hands on a Steinway Model D Concert Grand. It was akin to ... more

It was only shipped a few days ago from CDJapan so I should probably be in receipt of it in a week or two...or three....but will comment on the SQ once I do receive it. And yes, it was a great deal for two newly minted Blu Spec RBCDs with a full 40 tracks! ... more
Concern with sacd disc players
December 1, 2015
As Fitz so cavalierly stated: NOTHING is FOREVER! My older Oppo-NuForce modified player no longer plays the multichannel layer of SACDs so I upgraded to an OPPO BDP~105 which is actually significantly better. And OT, but relevant: I just spent a small fortune (literally) on repairing my Meridian 800 DVD~A player and by replacing the 'ancient' ... more

Even though I'm Mahlered out, Brett.....couldn't resist this one. Just placed my order. Speaking of Star Wars........SW Director J J Abrams was on the tonight show (tonight) with Jimmy Fallon and he was relating a story that Lin~Manuel Miranda, composer/lyricist of the mega hit Broadway show "Hamilton" composed the music for the Cantina scene in ... more
Horowitz: Historic Return to Carnegie Hall: 4 Hybrid Stereo SACD Boxset
November 30, 2015
I was hoping that ramesh would comment on the quality of both the performances and the sound quality taking into the account the limitations of the RBCD format. From my 'scant' recollection of the Horovitz vinyl releases, he was always afforded state of the art (for its time) sound reproduction. Hopefully, if CDJapan's comments on this boxset are ... more

On December 23, 2015, SONY Classical Japan will be releasing 4 hybrid stereo SACDs of Vladimir Horowitz's classic return to Carnegie Hall recorded on May 9, 1965. According to the CDJapan website, these are based on NEW DSD remasterings. Discs 1 and 2 include the final 'edited' versions from the original Columbia LPs and discs 3 and 4 will include ... more
