Haydn: Emperor Quartet, Mozart: Hunt Quartet - Alban Berg Quartett        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

Releases like this make me scratch my head sometimes, although mainly in terms of what else there would be in the majors' vaults to remaster and release in high-resolution). SACDs mastered from PCM sources or PCM transfers from analogue are one thing, but from RBCD PCM sources? What good can a ... more
Miles Davis Quintet: Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

Note this is NOT a reissue of the earlier APO SACD (remastered by Doug Sax?), which by the way, I do not know. This review is for the 2014 series of Kevin Gray remasterings. Compared this to the recent SHM-SACD. The APO sounds as if from session tapes, very transparent, having said that, there are ... more
Adagio d'Albinoni - Gary Karr      (1 of 1 found this review helpful)

Thanks to this reissue in SACD I'm rediscovering an album of which, to be honest, I'd only listened to the first track with regularity (but, as one can see, that alone may be worth ordering it again in high-resolution format). Sonically, the improvement from the Cisco Gold redbook CD did not, at ... more

This, to me, is one of the handful most successful Esoteric remasterings. The luminosity of Grumiaux' tone, the sheer joy of music-making, sheer bliss. Been listening to e.g. the Fischer and Thorsen SACDs lately, but hearing this, one is reminded some things were indeed better in the olden days… If ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 9 - Bernstein        (8 of 8 found this review helpful)

I only have the DG Originals redbook CD to compare to, compared to which the improvement in sound quality is nothing short of astonishing. If I had anything negative to say about Esoteric releases in general (apart from availability and price, not to mention the selection), then that I've sometimes ... more

This is really making me scratch my head: I don't have a problem with matters of personal taste, or anyone finding the new APO expensive given the short playing time, or deploring the fact that the Concerto in F is missing etc. - but to say the two remasterings sound the same says more about the reviewer (and/or his equipment) than the two releases ... more

I have both the stereo and mono 24/192 PCM 2013 Remaster, as well as the so-called "best" of the the earlier SACD releases, the single-layer CS 64935, and now this, the MFSL SACD. I can see why some prefer the monaural PCM (although perhaps for sentimental reasons, as it most corresponds to the original release), but I grew up hearing this album in ... more

"There are two classic recordings of the complete Daphnis et Chloé which will never be superseded: Pierre Monteux with the LSO on Decca and Charles Munch with the Boston SO on RCA" Those are indeed legendary recordings, and regardless of what "supersede" means in the context of musical interpretation, life would be poorer without them (= that is ... more
