I’ve had this disc since shortly after release in 2003, first on rbcd, then on sacd after I got my sacd player. I really like this set of the Brahms symphonies. The sound and the playing remind me a whole lot of my favorite rbcd versions of these, Abbado/Berlin, early 90’s on DGG. This is a wonderful recording from the Bavarian State Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta, made at the end of the orchestra’s short European tour in September 2004. I really liked the first two LsoLive releases of Shostakovich 5th and 11th by Mstislav Rostropovich, and I anticipated more of the same with this release of the 8th. This new release by Mark Wigglesworth of his slowly continuing Bis Shostakovich project is most welcome. After the disappointment of the Rostropovich release, this was a most pleasant listen.
