This disc was recorded live in the studio, with no overdubs. It thus stands out both because of the writing and the playing - all excellent - and because it is, essentially, a live performance. And an impressive performance it is. The list of players, including Hiromi's own band, and Anthony Jackson, David Fiucznski and Jim Odgren should be enough to alert one to the probabilities of excellent playing.

I have several Hiromi recordings. Although she can sound a bit derivative at times, her sources are impressive - Michel Camilo and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, not to mention Chick Corea. But so what? Her playing is articulate and dynamic and, uniquely humurous. When you appreciate that what you are hearing is a live performance you realize that this gal absolutely kicks ass. She belongs in the upper echelons of comtemporary jazz piano players, not to mention composers and band leaders. She takes a back seat to nobody.

The surround mix is very dynamic. As the surrounds and center speakers are used continuosly and creatively, the engineers and the producer (Ahmad Jamal) get to play a significant role in the creation of this performance. By virtue of the playing and the engineering/producing together this recording becomes both a live performance AND a multichannel studio album of note.

Telarc has done its typical excellent job of getting the most out of EMM's Meitner-modified ADC's and DAC's, the sonics are superb, and the excitement of the live performance is captured beautifully. I highly reccomend this disc.

Hiromi: Another Mind Hybrid Multichannel SACD 2003

Oh man, this was a great trip for me. Hiromi is an awesome piano player. The Jeff Beck of piano. Big modern jazz/fusion feel. My first disc with her. Ralph turned me onto her and glad he did.

The first review of this disc is quite good. A live recording, no overdubs, recorded live directly to Sonoma DSD.

Stereo Sonics: are superb with great stereo balance and nice punch. Sounds good at all volumes that I tried, easy and louder.

Multi Channel: Of course the point of purchase. Well balanced, one or two gimmicks, but for the most part front loaded with good even presence in all speakers.

Performance: I believe this 2002 recording released in 2003 is what really makes this a stand out multi channel disc. Her trio and guests are absolutely great.

Packaging: Plastic jewel case with square corners. Superb personal liner notes. Telarc notes on stereo and surround. Recording notes complete, what board, cables, mics, speakers, etc was used during recording. Fascinating.

I am not at all disappointed, glad I have it.
