Performance:   Sonics:
This is Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, a recording by Harmonia Mundi (HMU 807323) with Olga Kern at the piano with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Christopher Seaman. Olga Kern won the Gold Medal at the 11th. Van Cliburn International Competition. I had the oportunity to hear three live performances by her, one featuring this same concerto and two other solo recitals. Ms. Kern is an extraordinary pianist (very attractive, BTW) of great sensitivity and musicality, very passionate (as befits this concerto), with a keen sense of tempo, a rightness of manual dexterity (sometimes reminds me of Richter) and a command of the instrument that is virtuosic. Mr. Seaman and Ms. Kern tend towards the slower range of tempi, exception being made of the prestissimo passages, which are handled with exeptional clarity and delicacy. From the opening piano chords we know we are in the presence of a master and the last movement is a tour de force in precission. This is a DSD hybrid recording, so one can compare the redbook stereo with an SACD stereo or multichannel sound. The recording is sparkling clear, dynamics are well recorded, there is a sense of space with clear separation between instruments, lots of air and true timbres. The recording inlcudes the symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini which is extremely satisfying and played with fire and bravura. This is a good example of what SACD is capable of.
