Reviews: Bach: Cantatas Vol. 1 - Milnes

Performance:   Sonics:
This is an absolutely divine recording of Bach's cantatas on period instruments.

All the virtues of SACD are in presence in this recording. Voices have a stunning presence,
with the ambience of the recording venue clearly heard.

Unlike many period instrument recordings, the violins do not screech, but have real body to
their sound.

The performances also have a real energy to them, with vitality and bounce.

This is currently one of my favorite demonstration discs for SACD, among the 100 or so I have.

I haven't heard the multichannel mix yet, so I can't comment on that.

Performance:   Sonics:
really disappointing - the engineers here have made a major miscalculation in doing little or nothing to rein in the cavernous church acoustic.

taking the example of cantata 167, the solo arias suffer from the voice image swimming round woozily - you can't get a clearly defined take on where the voice is, and you can't hear the words clearly.

the chorale at the end is possibly even worse in this respect - just a shapeless mess sonically, to be honest. it's like looking at a slide that no-one has bothered to focus properly.

the performances seem very good, but honestly it's irrelevant - MC sound should be about increased clarity of definition, and this disc goes a long way in the opposite direction.
