Reviews: The Moody Blues: In Search of the Lost Chord

Upon opening the package I thought that I did not receive a SACD version. SACD is not indicated anywhere on the album. It does mention DSS: Dynamic Sound System, and it did have the correct serial number: 983-214-7, so I opened it. It is a hybrid SACD.

My first impression was that it was just OK, but not as clean or dynamic as I was expecting.

Then I pulled out my Redbook CD of Lost Chord. The SACD is superior in everyway. It plays louder, is more dynamic, more defined, and cleaner. There are times when you expect something to get even louder with the SACD, and it doesn't so there is still some compression. And the trebble isn't as clean as I hoped, but its clearly superior to the original CD.

I then played the CD layer. I "think" its a little better than my CD, but it's very close. This is not like the Rolling Stones SACDs where even the CD layer is much superior to the original CDs. It's more like Dark Side of the Moon, where the CD layer is unimpressive.

I'm listening to the bonus disc as I write this. The alternative mixes are very interesting. Some are very different from the final version, but very good. It's difficult to comment on the sonic quality. I'm listening to the CD layer through my computer speakers, but it appears as good as Disc 1, if not better.

So, in my opinion, this SACD is not as great as I hoped, but it is an improvement over the CD. It's a good price, especially considering the 15 bonus cuts. This SACD took the meaning of "bonus cuts" to another level.

I've ordered all five SACDs, and as far as I can tell, the other four have not shipped, but I'm not cancelling the order.

Overall, I'm pleased with this purchase.

Follow-up (5 days later):

I've now listened to the SACD at home, and the CD layer in my car a couple times. My ratings stay.

I also listened to my record, and the vinyl is more alive with better defined bass than the SACD. The SACD has superior trebble, which may be due to the fact that I've played with album over 50 times and its almost 40 years old.

I have also received Days of Future Passed, and it is excellent. It's sonically superior to Lost Chord. The other three Moody Blue SACDS "are in the mail".

I still am pleased with my purchase of In Search of the Lost Chord, and look forward in receiving the additional three albums.

I just received the SACD release of this album. Is it just me or is there no 5.1 on this release. I have the other Moody Blues SACDs and they are in 5.1. I'm trying to find out if this is the way the release is supposed to be, just 2.0 or if there might be some kind of software problem.

Well, this 5 CD set is definitely worth the money but sadly, this particular CD (INSOTHLC) is NOT a 5.1 SACD. Even though the accompanying insert says "5.1 SS mix manipulated from the Original Quad Masters" the CD is a 2 channel SACD. This album was originally made in 1968 not 1972. The rest of the CDs (DOFP, AQOB, TOCCCF, and OTTOAD) are correctly labeled.

That said it is still a superior CD to the original I bought when first released. The 3 bonus CDs alone make this 5 CD set worth adding to your collection.

This is the second SACD of the Moody's that I have picked up and once again am very pleased with the it. Clearly I am hearing things and depths I never have heard before.

I was a bit concerned at first as the packaging does NOT make any indication of SACD but don't worry it is.

If you are a fan of the early Moody Blues then this is well worth hunting down.

Something weird with this SACD - I will run some tests and see what is going on if I can - the length of the data (read from PS3) is very short compared to all the other Moody Blues titles. If I find out anything I'll let you know

It sounds OK and does register as an SACD but I'll try to get some details. ElusiveDisc reports it is an SACD as well

ADDENDUM: ***I can confirm***, once unpacked from the disc that the resulting music is 2.8mhz (2822.4 kHz) 2 channel DSD
Don't sweat it - and I think it sounds good !
