This new RCO Live release is a very good one. I’ve come to be very impressed with the sound of the Concertgeboux Orchestra in live concert as captured by the Polyhymnia recording team.
The recording here of the Shostakovich Seventh Symphony in this year of Shostakovich is really like so many others. The fabulous first movement gives way to the two middle movements of somewhat meandering quiet music, and then a wonderful finale and big climax. What makes it all so very pleasant to listen to is the sound of the orchestra.
Valery Gergiev used two orchestras to achieve a very big sound. No such need here. The recording engineers have done the job, and with a much cleaner sound than the Philips recording.
The Kitajenko recording is a nice one, but is much smaller sounding in comparison. I also have the Water Lily recording, and the less said the better.
This is a recording to consider if looking for a really good sounding Shosty 7th!

For those who care, there is applause at the conclusion of the symphony, as in some of the other RCO Live discs.
