Reviews: Doug MacLeod: Unmarked Road

Performance:   Sonics:
This white male folk/blues performer has his own style. It's not New Orleans, Memphis, or Smokey Mountain blues. He says that he's from Missouri, and I believe it.

The recording is high quality. The strings of the guitar have this realistic sound that make one glad to own a SACD player. The vocal are clean and the lyrics are interesting. This is a quality SACD.

I loved this SACD so much, I also bought MacLead's other SACD, Whose Truth, Whose Lies.

I'm not a big folk or blues listener, but I do enjoy this SACD

Performance:   Sonics:
This SACD is not as good as Macleod's first album "Whose Truth, Who's Lies". But it is very good Blues music and another reference SACD.

Performance:   Sonics:
Doug MacLeod: Unmarked Road. Hybrid SACD Stereo Only.

Now, this disc I am sure you will like, captivated me with it's less is more. An acoustic blues disc with maybe a touch of folk.

Quick Facts: Doug MacLeod born in New York, 1941. This his 7th recording, released 1997 and third for Sledgehammer Records formerly AudioQuest Music. A white singer songwriter that has a black mans voice.

Performance: Eight musicians along with Doug contributed to this very acoustic disc. Not every musician contributes on every track. All 12 tracks written by MacLeod. Some tracks guitar and percussion only, some with piano, some with organ, some with bass, some with backing vocals, you get the picture. This performance is comfortable, like sitting on the front porch with a warm breeze after Sunday chicken dinner, in fact as I write, this is my third spin and I have a warm breeze going through my front window and just finished my Sunday chicken dinner. This performance is one that I guarantee will fit anybody's palate.

Stereo Sonics: These audioquest discs are premier discs and this is no exception. Recorded with the audiophile in mind or maybe in truth with the artist in mind. All tracks with guitar and percussion, some with added bass guitar and it always felt they where in my listening room. Because of the high sonic recording you will hear, creaking of guitar necks, occasional toe tap, bongos, drums and you are able to hear exactly as the fingers and hands hit them. I don't feel comfortable in this particular review using fancy audiophile adjectives to describe the sonic beauty of this disc. It is beautiful down home and that is how it should be explained. I closed my eyes and I put the instruments in my living room, lined up in a row, and I went from San Mateo to Mississippi, even though it was recorded in L.A.
Whew, that's good enough. I listened to the SACD layer on the home machine. I listened at 60 and 68 decibels. I felt the lower volume was the mood I wanted to be in but I did listen at the higher volume to test the sonic quality out and was excellent at either volume.

Packaging: Plastic SACD jewel case. Great liner notes with Doug explaining the theme of all the 12 tracks he wrote. Also as per most of the AudioQuest discs superb recording notes, tape, mics, cables, recorders, etc.

Wow, great music. I think my favorite song, and just plain awesome sonically is Track 10, Night Run To Freedom. It is just a guitar and bongos instrumental, truly spectacular.

I hope my review was helpful, if not send me an email and tell me why so I can learn.
