Performance:   Sonics:
This is certainly the most rewarding and interesting of the Chandos Cycle so far.Tansman freely admits borrowing or being influenced by other composers and in these three totally different works you will frequently find references or outright copying of their styles.
Listening to all the three discs so far the main observation is that Stravinsky was a great influence and that "Alex" was never likely to write long flowing melodic rhapsodic pieces. He doesnt appear to ever duplicate anything either.
The first recording of his 2nds symphony, dedicated to Koussevitsky is probably the nearest he went to a normal classical symphony in style ,even though the numerous other composers influences are quite clearly evoked.
It will be 27 minutes of sheer entertainment and I would suggest you try listening to this before reading the excellent booklet that Chandos provide.
The same could be said of the following and totally different 4 movements for Orchestra ,opens quietly and quite varied in styles again clear reference to other composers of that period he had met.(18 minutes.)
Final work is a totally unusal and contrasting, Symphony concertante for Piano quartet and orchestra.(25 minutes of yet more styles interwoven by this skilfull orchestrater.)
So If you dont like Gershwin (fabulous take) Ravel Bach Bartok Mendlessohn and above all Stravinsky to name only a few, plus references back to his birthland ,which seemsd to have disowned him, then this disc wont be of interest.
Otherwise bask in the glorious DSD smooched sound which may have taken a little of the occasional spikeyness of this music. Playing and conducting seemed outstanding.Supplied in a normal CD case.
Suprisingly ,a late contender for my disc of the year.
