I bought this when it first came out because I have generally been pleased with the sound quality of Pentatone's SACDs and I love this piece of music. SACDs have the ability to bring the bass and dynamics of a life performance into your living room. Toward that goal this disc succeeds in spades. The performance is good- but not great. Great I will leave to Charles Munch's Boston Symphony Orchestra performance from 1954. That performance is available on SACD but you really need to go to the Classic Records 45 or 33 rpm vinyl pressing to hear into his performance. Too much of this inner detail is lost on the Munch SACD as well on the the Pentatone disc. Still the power of the piece is not present on the Munch due to the lack of deep bass and limited dynamics on either the vinyl or on the SACD . I would thus strongly recommend the Janowski Fantastique but I would also try and pick up the Munch on vinyl. If my memory serves me correctly the LSC 1900 Munch was never released in stereo until Classic brought it out in the last 90s. The Munch used two microphones but the Pentatone I would suspect uses many microphones. This probably accounts for the wonderful inner detail and depth on the vinyl Munch and the lack of the same on the Pentatone.
