Aside from Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks from way back, this is my third Stones sacd and a dearer title because it reminds me of high school. I previously own a 1990's rbcd version that I find to be loudly mastered, compressed, unclear (muddy to some) and quite bright. I waited quite long for a replacement that I hope to be the definitive version, or at least the one nearest to it. I may have found it.

This shm-sacd is mastered less louder than the rbcd. It's also warmer thus not fatiguing to listen to. The vocals are clearer and more distinct, notwithstanding the peculiar and trademark "twang" of Jagger and Co. The guitars and percussion instruments are nice and less intrusive. The harmonica sounds sweet! Just a little bit more clarity in percussions and a bit fatter bass (to add more body) to some tracks would have rendered this sacd excellent. This and other newly released sacds from audiophile recording companies (i.e. - Mofi, Universal, Warner, Analogue Productions) seem to have that "rounded edge" treatment that's turning out to be the trend nowadays. Looks like "pleasing to the ears" is favored over "intricate details" by record execs. Well, despite being better than the 90's rbcd, even first time listeners can guess that this sacd was from a decades old era as faint tape hiss can be be heard. Outdated sound? Yes, but I like it, in fact very much. Vintage crap? Definitely not!

This may not be one of the stellar shm-sacd releases in terms of sound quality but in my opinion, sounds very good and may be the best digital version so far and definitely gives a good whacking to the 90's rbcd!

Recommended to every Stones fans.

Rolling Stones: Some Girls SHM SACD Japanese Reissue November 2014 Stereo

This 2014 release UIGY 9585. In 2012 it was released by Universal Music Enterprises in a Japanese only SHM-SACD version. Originally a 1978 release.

The earlier RBCD issues have a better DR score this this at DR 11.

I first heard this in 1980? while hauling a horse trailer on magic mushrooms, another story. Have seen the Stones twice.

Performance: Great Stones performance with big hits. As close to Exile as you can get. My favorite always has been the song Shattered, something about that riff just drives me. Ten great songs that I happen to enjoy all and it is a good disc from beginning to end.

Stereo Sonics: Really good. I was wondering about how I would hear this as I saw the DR 11 and I always try to be adjective. This disc had good, even, mellow sonics. Vocals had no shrill and stereo stage was well balanced with nothing out of place. I am even inclined to believe that the DR 11 is possibly erroneous and might be best if was tested again.

Packaging: Plastic jewel case with square corners. Green ink disc. Original paper mini booklet, with fun pictures and notes. Japanese mini book in English and Japanese with track listing and all lyrics.
Note: Wikipedia has great notes about much controversy surrounding the original LP artwork and packaging.

This review is of the Shm Sacd REISSUE of this classic stones album. Unlike most reviewers I have problems with the sound of these reissues from Universal Japan. I own many Stones Shm sacds and thankfully none of them sound anything like this one. In fact......of the many. many shm sacd;s I do own only one other is almost as bad that being the Asia sacd. The mastering tech for that one went on to do terrific work on the Stevie Wonder shm sacd's.
This particular sacd reminds me of the recent Yes 90125 sacd release. Many reviewers simply loved the sound claiming it was the best ever while others agreed it was full of digital nasties and compression and treble problems. who IS RIGHT OR WRONG?? At least in that comparison there were different opinions.

As for the album its a great one featuring three classic cuts from the band and several other songs that are more than enjoyable. If you're a Stones fan you gotta love Miss you , Beast of Burden, shattered....and even far away eyes.

The sound is very troublesome. Much like the Yes sacd it has a boomy quality and possesses none of the usual warm, delicate sound that has made shm sacd's a very special music device. As I mentioned earlier this disc doesn't even come close to any other Rolling Stones shm sacds I own. Take your pick....Sticky Fingers, Black and Blue, Let it bleed.........they have a completely different sound. They allow for the volume to be increased significantly. Not so with this reissue......in fact the opposite is true.

Certainly this world is big enough to accept different opinions as long as they are done honestly and objectively.

I cannot recommend this particular shm sacd reissue by Universal Japan. I steadfastly cling to my initial impressions that something went awry with post production work on this particular sacd.
