|Sometimes one purchases a recording and likes one or more aspects of it, but doesn't care much for another. This particular disc is all but a revelation: everything is absolutely first rate.
The Malaysian Philharmonic has rarely played with such conviction, giving freshness, life and genuine excitement to all the works on this disc. One can imagine the sweat pouring from Claus Peter Flor's brow throughout each of these pieces.
Dvorak's 7th Symphony is a joy to begin with, and I suspect, it'll be quite difficult to find a performance that can best this one in terms of passion, depth and conviction. The "Othello Overture" is stunning, and "The Wild Dove" (also known as "The Wood Dove") has rarely received a better reading.
BIS has been bitterly criticized for its recording techniques by a few, but praised by many, many more members of this website, as well as reviewers worldwide. That BIS recordings start out as PCM recordings, and are converted over to DSD-mastered SACD's seems heretical to some, though most people prefer to listen with their ears, and not their eyes. On the engineering notes, this disc states, "48Khz/24 bit." To some, that means "low resolution," and they'll avoid this recording like the plague. That's their loss, as this is, at least to my ears, is not only one of the very best sounding BIS SACD's I own, it's one of the best sounding SACD's overall. Frankly, I don't know why BIS even bothered to state anything other than "high resolution A/D converter," as stated on most of their other recordings.
I have two other recordings on BIS by the Malaysian Philharmonic, conducted by Claus Peter Flor: Suk's "Asrael Symphony," and Smetena's "Ma Vlast." I simply don't like the Suk piece, and adore "Ma Vlast," whose engineering notes, save the "48Khz/24 bit" statement are all but identical to those on this Dvorak disc. Nevertheless, good as the Smetana disc sounds, this one just bowls it over.
Highly recommended. (Could you tell?)
