I think I have a defective disk (Geffen Deluxe Edition #B001366-36)of this work. According to the sticker on the packaging and the liner notes, this is supposed to be a SACD-Multichannel and (Redbook) CD hybrid however my DVD player can only read it in cd mode. The SACD layer does not register on my brand new Yamaha DVD 2300 player.

Did anyone else have problems with this disk? Was I wrong in expecting this to be an SACD multichannel disk?

Thanks!

Update: I confirmed that disk 2 of the set is read as a SACD however disk 1 cannot be read so I took it back as defective. The problme now is that the replacement disk 1 also cannot be read as an SACD despite being marked as a Mutlichannel SACD hybrid.

My next test will be to check it at a local electronics store to see it their SACD can read it or not. Then I will conclude that my player is defective. If their equipment can't read it I guess I'll need to return it to the store again...this is so weird. I have purchased close to 2000 cds in my life and only 1 was defective out of the box.

Has anyone else had trouble with thier edition of this disk?

No problems with my copy on a Sony NC685V.

Update: I took the disk to a local electronics store where they were gracious enough to let me try it on an identical Yamaha DVD 2300 player. The player had no trouble reading the SACD Multichannel layer...went home and tried it again on mine but it won't read it. It starts to read and starts to display 0000. but when it gets to the last time digit it hangs. So I think I have a defective player. Rats! I think it is still in warranty though so I'm calling my salesman today. But now I have to unplug everything, box it up, drive 60 miles, B.S. with the salesman for a while...pick up the new one, drive 60 miles home, hook it all up again and hope it works.

Update: Salesman says no problem about a replacement except they are out of stock. Oh, well everything else plays and sounds terrific!

Slightly off topic: we viewed Open Range on dvd last night and the sound mix was incredibly entertaining. I ducked my head several times during the big gunfight due to the effect of bullets seeming to whizz by my head or hit the wall behind me...very, very realistic! A sonic treat!

I also have a Yamaha S2300 and I had the same problem you described with two different copies of the Tommy SACD. I find it hard to believe my player is defective when the only one of the two discs won't work. I haven't had any problems with any other discs.

I felt the same until I tried the disk on a different 2300 player. I watched the display carefully expecting it to show "0....0....0....0...hang" [trying to graphically approximate the timing]. Instead it went "0....0....0....0.12 75:02 Play"! And it was on the SACD circuit. I was really hoping it was the disk too.

Perhaps it is a simple as a need to reclaibrate the SACD laser. I've had no problems with other disks as well. I am reluctant to shell our for any more Deluxe Editions though until I get this resolved.

Good luck!

I had a similar problem with just one disc that threw my player out of alignment. The problem then started to manifest itself with previously good discs. I went through an alignment procedure (different for each player) and got a replacement disc and it's been fine since. This was well over a year ago.

Update:

A few weeks ago I called the store where I bought the player and explained the problem. They said they would order me a replacement but they did not have one in stock. Apparently these units are very popular right now and selling like the proverbial hot cakes.

Yesterday we took the player in for the exchange. I wanted to show him what had happened and make sure it didn't happen on the new player too. We hooked up the old player and the same error occured on disc 1...0...0...0...0 then hang. The SACD layer on disc 2 read perfectly. Then we tried the new player and the SAME thing happened! Tried it on another Yamaha floor model and the error occured again Then we tried it on Pioneer and Denon units and the SACD layer was read perfectly.

So, he is going to contact Yamaha to check if a firmware update is needed. I'll keep the group updated.

I had the same problem with the disk. I order it by Amazon and returned it twice since it is the only disk that does not work properly. I also have the Yamaha S2300 DVD. I will be interested to hear if there is something to do.

I tried to play the cd on my computer which had creative labs 5.1 live digital sound card with 5.1 speakers. I put in in my Samsung DVD drive and it would not recognize that there was a disk in the drive. I put the cd in my Sony dru 500a dvd burner drive and it worked ok. (did not get any sound out of the center channel)

Very strange

You were expecting some? If you play a hybrid SACD in a computer drive (assuming it's compatible), CD or DVD player it will only be able to access the CD-compatible layer. You'll need a SACD (or SACD/DVD) player to read the high-resolution signal and hence play it in multichannel.
