Can anyone recommend a multichannel recording of Handel's Messiah or are there none available as yet? Thank you for your help,

David

I think there are two versions available on DVD-Audio. One on EMI, one on ArtsMusik.

Unless I'm mistaken, the McCreesh Messiah was not recorded in surround. As i recall from the redbook cds (which i borrowed form the library rather than bought), the performance was very good, - maybe not as good as the Suzuki on BIS or with as good soloists as Gardiner, but very good nonetheless. If you want a good performance on SACD, then certainly this would do, but I can only hope DG give him a better surround mix than they did for the Biber mass. Whatever they do, the rear channels will be electronically generated in the studio. I'm going to give it a miss and wait for a genuine multi-channel recording.

IF MCH is an absolute need, I don´t really know .But if you want the best possible sound and interpretation ,the Proprius live analogue recording also released on SACD is simply the best I´ve ever heard.Give it a try.

Our Messiah from Arts on DVD-A just arrived, it is recorded in 24/95 and in MC. First impressions – nowhere near Gardiner or some other notable British baroque specialists, but there’s nothing wrong with it performance-wise. It actually has a charm of its own and I got quite used to the style after a while. It is generally on the slow(ish) side, chorus is solid and incredibly warm sounding. The recording is good and there is a lot of reverb, not sure do I like it that much, but it suits the performance. Surround in natural. So, if you’re desperate to have Messiah in MC, and can play DVD-A this one will do for now.

I know McCreesh’s Messiah on DG very well, it was advertised as THE Messiah for the Millennium but it didn’t really turn out to be a success as expected. He can’t escape of being directly compared to Gardiner and, although enjoyable, his performance leaves a lot to be desired. If that one comes out on SACD from DG I will be hugely disappointed.

Out next month:

Handel: Messiah - McCreesh
