Discussion: Live in Tokyo 1970 - Szell

I wish Sony would license Szell's 1970 live 'Das Lied' with Richard Lewis and Janet Baker from the Cleveland Orchestra's archives. Like they did with this Sibelius 2nd recording. Both are included in the orchestra's 75th Anniversary box set(1993). I've heard many good things about Kubelik(Audite) which also features Janet Baker but Szell's has a better tenor and a much better orchestra and the performance is more characterful, rhythmically incisive, and spontaneous. This is one of his great recordings you probably haven't heard yet.

Yep, and there are many other Szell recordings still awaiting SACD release- the Janacek Sinfonietta, Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Walton second symphony and Hindemith variations...

C'mon Sony... show us you still care (OK - I know - fat chance, they never did).

Still, one can hope.

PS Incidentally, this 1970 Tokyo recording contains the best Sibelius 2 I ever hope to hear. Well worth searching out.
