A gushing review of what would seem to be a revelatory 5.1 mix premiered at the Princeton conference;

Once again I wish I had surround...

well, it seems no The Wall on SACD then....

I also wrote a review on the 5.1 mix (and coverage of the conference at Princeton) for any interested...it was amazing!

luna65, was there any new light shed on the difficulties of remixing The WALL for 5.1 since the master elements were in such bad shape?

Also, will Amused To Death will released on a single SACD (or will it be a double disc)?

Not publicly, no. But those issues remain and if James *did* indicate that he's proceeding with the Pink Floyd The Wall movie Blu-ray release as the next project (which I *think* is what he said in the Q&A) it could be construed as an admission of those issues, since he had wanted to mix the album for 5.1 before anything else.

The SACD release is likely going to be a single disc hybrid SACD as Chad Kassem has the rights to the high-resolution release; I believe the Deluxe Edition bonus content (if you can call it that) is going to come from Sony/Legacy. But none of these things are wholly definite yet.

So, presumably, the 5.1 remix of the WALL is so to speak "in the can" as the BD~V of The Wall is fairly imminent?

Splendid news, especially considering the obstacles Mr. Guthrie had to endure with the 'deplorable' condition of the Wall's multitrack elements.

Thanks, luna65.

Oh no, it's not finished; what I mean is that the problems with The Wall multitracks mean that he had to abandon his original plan, presumably. He wanted to do The Wall 5.1 first but it's not working out that way.

Was just reading up on SSS: Sticky Shed Syndrome which plagued a VERY large batch of professional Scotch recording tape from the 1970's on which The Wall was recorded. Incubation and baking of the tapes helps a bit but I'm sure these PF masters were heavily utilized in the 70's to create vinyl and cassette products.

The Movie, The Wall, did have a 70mm Metrocolor release in the UK with a discrete 6.0 mag striped soundtrack which hopefully survived this degradation.

And who knows how many classic artists/albums across ALL genres of the 70's also utilized this Pro Scotch tape and have suffered similar losses.

No doubt, James Guthrie will circumvent these obstacles and create a major coup when his 5.1 WALL remaster is finally ready for prime time.

He's certainly going to try! But yes the bad tape stock is the major issue at this point in the project. To my knowledge there was never any issue with the film multitracks and the print used for the DVD release (and thus presumably for the Blu-ray) was "pristine."

Just a recent update from Brain Damage; the re-release of Amused To Death has once again been delayed. No word on why or when we'll see it, just that we're going to have to keep waiting. If it's anywhere near as stunning as the early reviews have it (even in the 2.0 I'll be enjoying) then it'll be worth it. Keep an eye out on either Brain Damage or the Acoustic Sounds site for breaking news.

My local record dealer just told me that the ATD reissue has been cancelled. He doesn't state why..

Too bad. I was really looking forward for it
