Just curious what others think of the sound quality of Audio Fidelity SACD's (or their vinyl for that matter). I don't want to ask a leading question so I will leave my own impressions out for now.

I have not heard any other versions, so don't have a comparison or expectation to make or meet. It sounds good to me. If I recall correctly the saxophones and background singers on the song "Excitable Boy" really come alive. It made me wonder why the rest of the album didn't sort of jump out of the speakers like that. Anyway, I have only listened a couple of times so am still forming an opinion, but it seems like a solid remaster.

Agreed. I have an older RBCD which I've misplaced, so cannot compare with that version but so far, IMHO, all of the Audio Fidelity SACDs have been solid efforts.

If I were hard pressed to list my Pop/Rock/Jazz SACD reissues in terms of Sound Quality my first preference is for Universal's SHM~SACD releases followed by Analogue Productions (always, IMO, stellar) followed by MoFi and AF (tied)!

This one sounds really really good. Nice snap with the drums, great resonance with the piano. Lead and back-up vocals are clear. Worth every penny.

I have three AF disc. I do not have Excitable Boy. One I like very much the other 2 remind me of CDs in that my ear aches after about 10 minutes of playing. If I switch to a different SACD such as Santanas' Abraxas the earache goes away. I'm not thrilled with Mo Fi SACDs either. I only have one SHM-SACD and not thrilled with it either. I do like the Acoustic Sounds SACDs. Patsy Cline is great.

I have 3 AF SACD's and your comment fits with my impression, they sound like red book CD's, which is to say OK but nothing special. AF is issuing titles that are of interest to me but..........

I agree. Unless it is something special to me I'll pass. Special to me is getting harder and harder to come by these days. My taste for music has change, not radically, but my taste for sound hasn't.

I agree with you on the iffy selection of music presently available and forthcoming on SACD but, without sounding elitist, I would seriously question the efficacy of my system if SHM~SACDs fail to pique your interest.

They are, IMO, some of the best sounding pop/rock/jazz discs in my collection, bar none...and I have 42 of them and more on order.

Since upgrading to a Marantz SA11s3 (for STEREO SACD playback) and outfitting it with very pricey Shunyata Research interconnects and redoing my entire main system with Shunyata Research power cords/conditioners, I can honestly say that NONE of my AF SACDs sound anywhere near their RBCD counterparts.....bettering them, in fact, in EVERY conceivable way.

Before I initiated this "massive" upgrade, I could honestly say I shared your opinion, 5.1surround.

These discs aren't cheap by any stretch of the imagination.......but they do need one important factor: a system capable of decoding their true sonic nature....and this, from firsthand experience NOT conjecture!

I think many of them sound better than CDs but they are not leaps and bounds better. The AF "America" SACD is excellent however, I don't have much to compare it to. Great sound in any case. MOFI and AF are some of the handful of labels that release pop/rock titles so I try to support them even if it's a disc I may have passed on were more plentiful titles available. The niche nature of SACD has forced me to try out artists I never listened to before such as Warren Zevon which has beneficially broadened my music appreciation and taste. I now own more jazz titles thanks to Analog Productions than I ever thought I would and really enjoy the genre.

So I try to support pop/rock releases as money permits, even if it's not a favorite or an artist I never tried to experience before.

I knew a few of Zevon's songs, but I'd not heard a full LP before I picked up this SACD recently. I absolutely love it, both in terms of the material/songs and the gorgeous sonics.

I'm now looking to pick up more of his back catalogue. His self-titled LP from 1976 looks to be the one to try next. I wish it was available on SACD or DVD-A. Has anyone heard any rumours of any other Zevon releases being set for release on SACD?
