My question is When playing a SACD (with DSD switched off but the SACD layer selected in the settings and the screen confirming that it is playing a 2 channel SACD) is the 2 channel output from the analogue or optical outputs at the higher super audio or somehow scaled down to normal CD quality?

It is 2-channell hi-res PCM only on the HDMI - refer to your guide. page 22

Your player is probably similar to my BDP-S790 in that it will only play at the higher resolution over HDMI.

With any other connection method you will be listening to bog-standard CD resolution.

When you play the SACD layer, nothing will be output via coaxial. The player does not have an optical output.

I mucked around with trying to play SACDs on my Sony Blu-Ray player ... and came to the conclusion that the so-called SACD support was anything but. What a horrible experience compared to the simplicity and elegance of a standalone SACD player. Trying to play SACDs on the Sony Blu-Ray was just a messy, confusing and irritating experience ... involving going through countless menus on the TV with a remote control, ... trying to get it to simply play a disc ... and at the end of it, if you didn't have a HDMI receiver that did hi-res conversion over HDMI, ... it seems that my Sony Blu-Ray effectively couldn't play SACD anyway. So much for so-called SACD support. Pfft

Yes - basically this!

Unfortunately Sony BD players convert DSD to PCM when output through analog outputs. Only DSD to HDMI is the option. Total waste of money.

All of this makes me glad I bought an OPPO !

It's a $200 video player that happens to support SACD. It's not an audiophile product.
