1) Once again, I was struck by how rooted in the 1940’s the symphony is (unlike the Quartet), - mainly due to the use of the ondes martenot with its limited electronic palate. Unlike Shosti’s symphonies, the Turangalila doesn’t transcend its times (for me, anyway).

It's best approached as kitsch. I laugh every time the ridiculous ondes martenot whizzes by -- possibly the worst instrument ever.

This one's more about detail than passion. Lintu gets impressive clarity from the orchestra, which is picked up well by the recording. A little lacking in emotion, but well worth hearing, esp for Hewitt, whose reading of the solo part is as nuanced as any: http://www.classical-cd-reviews.com/2014/07/turangalila-symphonie-luntu-hewitt.html

I prefer the Chailly SACD.
Messiaen: Turangalîla Symphony - Chailly

The MC presentation is more interesting than the hall sound only on this disc.
I also prefer the soloists' balances on the Decca SACD.
The ondes Martenot is a bit too forward in the mix here at unexpected times.
