Some classical music is performed with musicians offstage or in the rear, but I can't think of a situation where they are overhead.

Agreed....but Ambisonics also dealt with height channels to embellish the acoustic space of the concert venue.

How are you Ralph ? I trust all's well :)

For good reasons, I choose not to 'spar' as you do ; let it, or some time, pass...

My dear Wilhelm: I am NOT, repeat NOT, adverse to new technology. I've even been eyeing a new curved 55 OLED HDTV from LG. But patience IS a virtue. As in ALL new technologies when the software catches up with the hardware then will be an opportune time to make a move.

With NHK already working on 8K x 4K things are moving way too fast.....even for me!

I happen to have and sometimes use a Soundfield ambisonics microphone, with which all directions in space are equally handled. With that it would be easy to add ceiling and floor (subterranean?) channels. Having speakers on the ceiling would certainly add more space to the image (slightly) just like rear speakers do (talking about concert recordings), but hanging something heavy above your head on a standard private house is just not safe or convenient. So it will never be a standard or common.

And since ALL speakers should have 'relatively' matched characteristics.....a near impossibility.

Visit your local IMAX theater for the 54 channel TRUE DOLBY ATMOS experience. Accept NO substitutes!

And as far as I'm concerned those newly announced upward firing loudspeakers just might BACKFIRE!

I was just at the HDTV Shootout in Scarsdale, NY, and the 55" OLED from LG is a sight to behold. Wow, truly perfect blacks, amazing. Love my 60" VT60 Panny but the future for plasma lovers is definitely bright with OLED.

Curved I can't stand, get back to FLAT panels please, but otherwise LG have turned up the heat as far as PQ goes. (no pun intended at plasma's expense)

Yes, dobyblue, there are some caveats to owning a curved screen and LG/Samsung/et alia are now manufacturing UHDTVs but any hint at the "shootout" that OLED will be utilized for the newer 4Kx2K TVs?

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the information.

Whilst I love my GT50 with it's almost perfect black levels, it's nice to know that something with even better black levels will be available when I eventually replace it.

BTW, I dislike curved screens intensely.
