The majority of the Quartets were original DSD multichannel recordings.

Ralph, - yes , but what about op. 18 specifically. Does anybody know?

Also, on the subject of Beethoven quartets, does anyone know what's happened to the Fry Street Q and their excellent "series".

That is a great price for a set of LvB quartets in hi rez sound. Unfortunately, I stopped buying recordings of the Tokyo some time ago because I just don't like their style and approach. I have found their playing to be polite and proper which only goes so far. They bore me.

I neither totally agree nor totally disagree with your assessment Krisjan but am reminded of a quote from an old edition of the Penguin SRG to the effect that, in Beethoven, quartets who pursue beauty will often miss the truth whereas those which pursue truth will always generate beauty.

I think this Tokyo set represents a good balance of both elements.

Paul, I did visit HM's website and could find NO information regarding op.18.

The Isomike Fry Street Quartet's DSD recordings are pearls of rare beauty but alas, only three SACDs have been released.

Fingers crossed that Ray Kimber sees fit to record the entirety of Beethoven Quartets with the FSQ.

All the notes report is that cd's 3 4 6 7 op.132 on cd 8 "were recorded, edited and mastered in DSD".

All discs were recorded by Brad Michel. Op.18 discs 1 & 2 not recorded in DSD therefore. All are multichannel.

The only thing that is giving me a pause is that there is a BluRay video of the complete quartets being released imminently. Different quartet obviously, but I don't know if I want to purchase 2 complete sets of this music in a row.

I cannot think of any oeuvre more deserving of one's investment in multiple recordings.
