Curious decision to reissue a recording with the serious flaw that the entire trombone section fails to enter at the climax of the Finale - owing to an audience member collapsing in the choir seats behind the brass.

They don't seem to mind incomplete performances since they issued Gilels' "Eroica Variations" with 4 measures missing!

The audience members who sit in those seats are often quite disturbing -- whether they collapse or not. It's completely distracting as they're usually within the spread of the spotlights. Using them as seats for the audience seems to have been something of an afterthought.

This is the one and only recording of Bernstein conducting the Berlin Phil. Not so surprising, especially the Japanese who flock toward those kinds of things.

It's also a fantastic performance and memorable occasion, despite the flaw—a welcome addition.

It is rumored that the orchestra hated Bernstein, hence the reason he was never invited back, so this is his only recording with them - a recording he refused to allow to be released because of the missing trombone entrance. It was not until after his death that his estate OK'd the release. Also, it's ironic that the Neo-Nazi's in the Vienna Philharmonic came to respect and love Bernstein. He showed them respect and love as players and as people, and they returned it. Not so the Berlin players.

I have a question for David as well as a recommendation to other reviewers: I have been occasionally suckered and disappointing by re-issues in SACD that are not multi-channel, but just 2 channel stereo. While this may not bother some people, it does others such as myself. That hole in the middle of the orchestra - winds appearing in the right channel when they are in fact seated in the center bothers me terribly. It would be helpful if you could indicate if the SACD re-issues are multi-channel or not.

Thanks.

With a few exceptions, all titles in the SA-CD.net database are flagged as "Stereo" or "Stereo/Multichannel", as appropriate. This forum is merely an adjunct to the site proper. If you're not using the title and composer/works databases you're not getting the full benefit of the site as it was intended.

For the record, all of Esoteric's releases are stereo.

The orchestra never hated Bernstein, how could they? They didn't know him, he only conducted there that one time late in his career.

It is more likely the rivalry with Karajan that kept Bernstein out of Berlin, as during the 60's and 70's Bernstein and Karajan were very much recording rivals - Bernstein bigger on one side of the Atlantic for Columbia, Karajan dominating on the other for DG, both occasionally drifting to EMI for overflow.

Remember, in the Bernstein era, Karajan did not conduct the NYPO at all - his only appearance with the NY Phil was in 1958, and although Bernstein had just become Music Director, the Karajan engagement had been contracted well before by Mitropoulos.

Is one to presume that this is a DSD conversion from a 24/96 master? If so, I do wonder whether patience might save me several tens of Euros once the download comes out...
