The Azur 752BD user manual talks about Dynamic Range Control:

There are 3 settings on, off, auto:
"Auto Play at the dynamic range specified by the disc. This option
applies to Blu-ray Discs only. For other disc types no dynamic range
compression is applied."

I didn't know a blu-ray could specify a dynamic range !
Surely the "Pure Audio" ones don't have this ?
What do players without this option do ? Surely not have it on as default ?
Is there any way of knowing which discs have a 'specified' dynamic range ?

As I understand it, it's a comfort feature for movies, so people can watch films without having to turn the volume down during loud scenes, if they want to avoid too much noise.

Actually, most BDP and AVR have this functionality for BD and DVD only. Only problem, is it compresses the source frequency range resulting in dull and lifeless sound quality. Only time this functionality should be used is late at night to avoid disturbing others.

Some Yamaha products especially AVRs have this dynamic range feature useful for reducing higher volume when ads come on.
