I'd like to see a corresponding graph showing profits of music labels/ corporations to see whether they're still making money and if so, how much.

Reminds me of a recent Sunday's " Pearl Before Swine" cartoon strip, "music is free bro"

Or revenues from music sales 1960-2014. Every industry has it's ups and downs. 2004 was probably a peak year for CD, so it's not helpful to use it as a reference. There are popular entertainment products which now compete with music purchases and which did not exist until the 1990s: movies (DVD), games.

Here's a graph with album unit sales (LP, cassette, CD and downloads) 1973-2008, which shows the format changes

Here is a great graph/blog. Basically CD sales peaked in 2000/2001.

If one takes Napster into account, it shows how much the P2P hurt sales, before iTunes, et al.

Interesting. The Stereophile chart doesn't show the totality of the CD market collapse as it begins to plot the data from 2004.

Today we are basically at 1989 CD sales level. If the trend continues into the future, we'll soon reach 1987, 85, and 84 levels......
