Is that a female singing on Refugees? I don't see her credited anywhere.

To reviewer sylvian:

I read your review of this album by Van der Graaf Generator (VDGG).

I notice you choose to use acronyms without first placing the words prior to the abbreviation (as I did above) which is the correct way to write. Of course, the subsequent use of a specific acronym would be proper usage.

Although I figured out what VDGG and SQ (sound quality) mean, I do not have a clue what PH means.

Please consider making edits to your review.

Thanks

PH = Peter Hammill.....singer/songwriter for Van Der Graff Generator. Hammill also had a solo career, as well, which is what poster sylvian was alluding to when he expressed a desire for Hammill's solo projects to be released on SHM~SACD.

That's what I took it too mean. But, I agree with Rick. It might help to explain the acronyms a little.

I've been listening to Still Life. It's awesome, Ralph. The operatic nature of Hammill's singing is very infectious. He could easily join Judas Priest. LOL! And... In La Rossa, I feel like I'm listening to Floyd's Animals. The sounds soon take on a cool. mellow Jazz tone with more dark undertones in My Room. This album might not have the varied sonic landscapes of Pawn Dawn, but all of the heavy existential themes that permeate this album take us to a unique journey of their own.

Once again I tried Prologic II...and once again the benefits are clear, especially the fabulous organ playing.

There is one bonus track "Gog". It's a live recording. The sound isn't that great on this track due to the poor quality of the original recording, but it's an impassioned performance and adds over 10 minutes to this SHM-SACD.

Highly Recommended, Ralphie

I played Pawn Hearts via my Marantz SA11S3 SACD player in DIRECT MODE (no DSP applied) and was absolutely stunned by the HUGE soundstage. Ditto for Harry Belafonte Live at Carnegie Hall and Tony Bennett Live At Carnegie Hall. It's as though my Marantz had suddenly become supercharged casting a soundstage which is both compelling and absolute....in stereo!

Should have my four matched Meridian speakers soon which will have NO disparity between fronts/rears so will definitely be looking forward to a new experience, altogether.

It certainly took me long enough!

Just as with the Tangerine Dream SHM-SACDs, the 2-ch soundstage of these VDGG albums is very impressive. And I can completely understand those who prefer listening in Direct Mode. As for me, I like to listen to these SACDs in both Direct Mode and DPL II.

You and Mark have a lot of new audio toys for your Mancaves. Perfect timing with all the excellent releases...Stereo and Multichannel. Thanks the Stardust link!

Brett, I always experiment with various DSP modes and I've found with the newer Stereo SHM~SACDs and Stereo SACDs even from AP, MoFi and especially ORG that putting my Meridian pre/pro in direct mode is (to borrow a phrase) like going from God's mouth to your ears. After all, splitting a stereo signal into 5.1 sometimes wreaks havoc with the purity of the original signal and just doesn't sound as persuasive, at least on my system. So call me a purist, if you will, Mr. Brett!

DSP modes are especially useful for recordings with a lot of out of phase info but on the older stereo jazz SACDs (or even RBCDs) with 'minimalist' miking, DIRECT MODE sounds simply amazing in STEREO.

Even those older Silverline faux mch DVD~A discs sound superb in stereo. Better pure stereo than atrocious faux surround.

A tip: when listening in DIRECT MODE try moving your listening position closer to the front speakers and you will experience all the ambience contained within that stereo recording......in SPADES! Works like a lucky charm!

That's exactly how I felt when I first listened to TD's SHM-SACDs. I was amazed at the depth and openness...the way the music floated in the air...even for recordings with a limited range.

But...the music and instruments of most 70s Prog Rock naturally lend themselves to surround. So, flippin' the DPLII switch shows their true potential.
And God saw that it was good.... (to borrow a phrase).

Monk's Dream sounds just fine in Direct Mode. I haven't even bothered with DPLII for it.

The Silverline trouble is the same for a lot of concert videos with a so called 5.1 mix. I feel like I'm listening to a 2-ch recording in disguise.
