...as well as the Genesis SACDs!

"...it was rough to open up a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly and see the following entry for the "brick" on The Must List: "Eight studio albums — remastered both in stereo (yes!) and in 5.1 surround (huh?)." Huh?! Guess that about sums up the state of multichannel music in the mass market.

No wonder a prominent surround mixer like Elliot Scheiner is getting impatient with the industry. At Surround 2005, he sat in the audience for the record-label panel. And after Universal's Paul Bishow stated that the surround initiative has to be "artist-driven," Scheiner raised his hand and said: "I've got four Steely Dan masters sitting in my studio. The band wants them done. Do I have your permission to start working on them?" Well, no, he didn't get that permission for Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic, and Katy Lied. Nor did Bishow give a release date for more Elton John titles already mixed by Greg Penny: Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player, Caribou, Rock of the Westies, and Blue Moves.

Much of the hesitancy stems from the uncertainty over the actual surround formats. SACD, though relatively popular abroad, has basically been abandoned by the major labels here. Accordingly, five Moody Blues titles — Days of Future Passed, In Search of the Lost Chord, On the Threshold of a Dream, To Our Children's Children's Children, and A Question of Balance — are being released on SACD by Universal's European division, but no plans have been set for the U.S. Similarly, some eagerly awaited SACDs from Genesis — including Supper's Ready, Foxtrot, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway — were mixed as long as a year ago but have never been slated for release here. And they seem to be on permanent hold Over There, too.

Except for the odd EMI title, standalone DVD-Audio has also been abandoned by the majors — though the technology has survived on some CD+DVD sets and a few DualDiscs from Warner and Universal. Late word on DualDisc, however, calls it "just about a dead issue," as one major-label source tells Billboard. The only big backer is Sony BMG — but the label's William Sondheim says, "We can carry the ball by ourselves for only so long." Sony BMG has already dropped the ball on surround DualDiscs, as it hasn't released a multichannel title since September."

the AGONY it is to read about those languishing steely dan records, 5.1-done but not dusted, just gathering dust now indefinitely. it's almost too much to contemplate, given the pretty horrible quality of previous RBCD transfers of these classic albums.

PLEASE can somebody out there do the decent thing and release them?! (and the elton john titles too preferably). i'll bet it's FAR from only me who's desperate to lay my money down to purchase!

This is absolutely horrible of course. I also know that David Crosby´s first solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name, is remixed by master technician/producer Stephen Barncard and has been in the hands of Warner/Rhino for some two years now.

oh dear, it gets worse. next you'll be telling me that somebody has done CSNY's "Déjà Vu" and is just plumb sitting on it, like the Fafner-dragon character in Wagner's Ring cycle....

The Gensis catalog is almost all remaster. Nick Davis is still working on Invisible Touch and as to do We Can't Dance.
After that the whole catalog will be release. I hope we will have a chance to listen to it... I am waiting for that...

I got it from the genesis web site. www.genesis-music.com
If you go to the forum section there is a part for Nick Davis.
He is the guy who is remastering the Genesis album in SACD. He is giving status of where he his. Very interesting.

I also know that the tribute band The Musical Box had a chance to listen to the sourround mix of Lamb Lies Down and Selling England By The Pound and they discovered new sound and new things... I guess they are lucky...

Hope we will have the chance to hear that soon.
There is a lot of speculation that the full catalogue could be out next year (2007) for the 40th anniversary of Genesis...

The first solo album by David Crosby will be released in November on "CD/DVD". i have no info about the DVD other than it includes a 5.1 track.

I read that Rhino is releasing a special edition of the Crosby record(I think in November), with a DVD including 5.1.

Well,

Do not even get me started on the stupidity of Universal Music!!!!! They are not just stupid on the music that you mention but many other titles and genres.

As a classical music lover I am horrified that Universal has not even bothered to release any other old classical titles. There are many recordings that would make magnificent transfers: recordings with Solti and Chicago, as well as the many recordings he did with the London Symphony and Philharmonic. There are the Wagner operas that he did, like the Ring Cycle. Then there are numerous operas and ballets that Richard Bonynge did with Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland and many other famous opera stars.

There are so many magnificent analogue Decca (Universal) recordings that would make fantastic transfers, yet Universal does not seem to give a flying flip whether any of these are ever transferred to SACD.

So, you are not the only one who's pissed off at Universal! You are pissed off because Steely Dan is ignored, while I am pissed off because so many great classical recordings are ignored!

Stupid Universal!!!

Cheers,
