Thrilling surprise! We have already this one: Liszt: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 - Arnaldo Cohen
It is hard to beat. What a challenge... :)

The superb playing from young Andre Kantorow combined with an even better recording than the Cohen one also from BIS,and the fact that it can be snapped up for less than €10 as native 24/96 hi res download makes it a release not to be overlooked imho.
I haven't heard the one from Pentatone so I can't comment how it compares to that recording. But one thing is sure, this is great stuff if you love virtouso piano playing equally well recorded ,and at a bargain price.

I agree this is a fantastic recording even in stereo and one of the very best I have heard from BIS in recent years and even those frequent critics of BIS uncompressed SQ should sit up and take note.

As to performance, I am not convinced. For me there are moments of immaturity in the playing of the 17 years old Kantorow, not so much youthful exuberance leading to over flamboyance but some notes and bars being dwelled on for too long as 'though he has at the back of his mind his mentors insisting he draws expression from every note. I find this a little naive and studied and not always natural in a way that may only be possible from experience and maturity. After all how broad an emotional canvas can a 17 year old have experienced in a short life-time. Emotions are not Imaginable.

For now I'll stick with Cohen.

Robert, you are right. I have listened this several times now and the performance is very impressive indeed. Maybe the review of the BBC Music Magazine (three stars - Good) was in my mind at the time of writing and listening. I have changed my mind. Essential SACD for music lovers!

One pianist who at least according to his own by the way, very interesting autobiography, actually confessed to skippping, glossing over and missing a note here and there at times was Arthur Rubenstein.
And there was actually a recording from EMI Karajan Bruckner's 7th that had a couple of bars missing on its first release on LP
Poppycocks! HA HA! Are you a fan of Woody Allen Robert?
I haven't heard that expression since Woody Allen's wonderful film "Magic in the Moonlight" when the hero debunks a fraudulent psychic.
I stand by my first impression of this recording, which was stunning both musically and recordingwise imo.
I actually played it yesterday via what some claim are the best headphones in the world, the not exactly bargain priced planar HIFIMAN HE 1000,and SQ was very realistic indeed and also a joy to hear, especially Malediction which was a novelty to me on this release.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to how one reads the music. I just took exception to your saying that he missed out on notes, that is, didn't manage to play them all. He did. All of them. That's all.

Best - Robert

There is a well written comparison of the two BIS recordings at the new site
