It becomes a mantra, but Channel, BIS, or Myrios can stop it by just commissioning new recordings of these works. Are they even hearing us?

It may be a question of finding available artists who have these long and difficult works in their repertory. John Lill is one of the finest interpreters of Brahms but he is knocking on a bit now and probably signed up to DG or somebody. Maybe the kids like flashier scores?

I believe you're quite right here. Nevertheless, since Kirill Gerstein has just recorded Brahms's piano quintet with the Hagen Qt https://twitter.com/kirillgerstein/status/506883558188015617 and his recent Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1, Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 2 - Gerstein, Gaffigan is quite fine, Myrios have a pianist in house who could do this, I suppose.

Same with BIS: I've heard good things about Jonathan Plowright, who does a complete cycle of Brahms piano music for them, so couldn't he hook up with the Bergen Philharmonic and conjure up some musical magic? Or maybe, the piano concertos are included in this cycle -- if so, I would love to hear from Robert

Channel recorded a fanciful piano concerto #3 w/Dejan Lazic Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 3 (arr. Lazic) - Lazic, Spano
so perhaps link him up to Ivan Fischer and voilà! Fischer is doing an excellent Brahms cycle anyway.

Uh. . . I don't think Dejan is with Channel Classics anymore.

I hear Brahms's music pop up in movies, mini-series, etc... So, it seems that he's still in vogue. I am with you, Fausto.

There should be plenty of opportunities to make new Hirez Surround/Stereo recordings of his PIANO CONCERTOS nos. 1 and 2.

Is there anybody out there???

PLEASE...

BRAHMS PIANO CONCERTOS nos. 1 and 2

I'm still waiting for those piano concertos from either Myrios, BIS or Channel.

I’d like to see I’m completely wrong here, but… SACD is a very week selling point in the Brahms piano concertos for most customers. Companies who releases the Brahms piano concertos will no doubt have to address a market where a purchase is a thoughtful music/artist choice and well over say 90% of potential customers will look at CD’s with equal interest (I’d say 99%!). That makes the competition extremely tough, tougher than for most other composers/works. Major orchestras, conductors and soloists on classic releases are readily available. And newer releases like those from Nelsons Freire and Hélène Grimaud are 5/5 star performances with super orchestras. And the Barenboim/Dudamel will make it tougher...?

Channel has the orchestra/conductor but not the soloist. But they do exist so here there is some hope for a great high res recording. BIS has a terribly bad catalogue in Brahms. And I don’t think they planned the Plowright releases themselves (which I like a lot), but rather bought them from others. BIS must lack the in-house management appreciation and willpower to create or filter out something good with Brahms. Myrios has Gerstein perhaps and then what else…?

To me it seems like the independents doesn’t have what it takes to make the Brahms Piano Concertos work. But also two great challenges to meet :-). The best place to look at is Channel. And they must ask Ivan Fischer to find someone that he can work with!

Stephen Hough is an obvious candidate who has toured extensively with Ivan Fischer and is loosely signed to Hyperion. He has the necessary gravitas to do them really well. He has recorded them before so why not?

Given that he just recorded them two years ago, I kind of doubt he wants to do it again so soon. Of course, there are 24/96 stereo downloads of these recordings available from Hyperion.

Judging from the samples/snippets online they will be my download of the day as 24/96 flac.Difficult to resist with both concerts on offer for the price of one!
I already have one good download version of the 2nd from Acousence.
But no hi res recording of the 1st.
Thanks for the hint!
Cheers Chris

The Stephen Hough recording is a minimalist one. It is severely short in the orchestra department and the romantic Brahms as I know him, is almost lost. One of my absolute favorite pianists makes one of the worst Brahms concerto recordings I know. What’s the chance of that?

"Beauty is in the ear of the beholder"
I haven't downloaded them yet. But there are at least five reviews out from places like International Record Review and others that are unanimous in their praise of both orchestra and soloist in these recordings.
I will buy them and hear for myself.
I also want to hear how a recording made in Grosses Festspielhaus sounds in high res.
It is huge hall which I have been to quite a few times but not really heard in recordings apart from old historical from Salzburger Festspiele.
What do you mean by minimalist in this context?
Cheers Chris
