This is the second installment of Gergiev's critically acclaimed Rachmaninov cycle with the London Symphony Orchestra. The last disc will be available in Spring of 2016.
Has anybody heard this disc yet? The surround sound (5.1) is deep and clear (with my headphones) - I haven't this disc yet in my library. Balakirev's "Russia" is an interesting bonus although LSO's tone is perhaps too European for the work.
What do you think?

Vahe

I have always had a soft spot for this which is regarded generally as his finest symphony.

Given that it was composed late in Rachmaninov's career, I found this new recording very true in the wistful and nostalgic feel that Gergiev gives it.

Sound is very good in surround especial from this troublesome venue.

The BIS never convinced me in the way as this one does but after this review, will give it another spin.

Russia is an intriguing make weight given that his music is never really heard, certainly in the West. Interesting as he seemed to spend most of his life telling everybody how to compose!!

Gergiev leaves the LSO next week and heads for Munich so not sure if Rachmaninov is intended to be a complete survey. seems unlikely.

This is a reasonable performance but the recording is way below par even by this challenging hall standards. I sensed at the live event that the work was under rehearsed.

Indeed; and it's most definitely the lack of LFE channel that's the major factor here, followed by the rear channels of course.

Wishful thinking, perhaps?

LMAO!
