Hi Ubertrout,

The Holst: The Planets, Grainger: The Warriors - Gardiner edition is OOP indeed, but a BD-A version is about to be released - that was recently postponed, but hopefully not for long.

I understand your reluctance in regards to the SHM SA-CD price. This is not given away for sure, but my opinion is the quality is up to the price. Currently I own 82 of these and I know I'll keep buying them. Analogue has the same penchant for these flat-transfer SHM editions so I know he will not be dissappointed by the Mehta. Of course, the AP edition is cheaper and AP has the advantage of remastering. So if you get the Mehta edition with refreshed sound, I say go for it, don't hesitate :-)

Are you sure you don't mean Holst: The Planets, Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra - Steinberg ?

I'm not so interested in most SHM-SACDs. While nice, I don't think the upgrade over RBCD is necessarily revelatory, especially compared to the sound quality (and extra channels) on modern SACD recordings for a third of the price. Meanwhile, with megaboxes selling for a dollar a CD for first-rate musicmaking, I've tried to avoid shelling out for stereo SACD remasters at Japanese prices. The AP of the Mehta is about the limit of the price/cost ratio I'll pay for a stereo remastering, helped by the inclusion of the Williams pieces.

Not to impugn how anyone else chooses to listen, of course. It's about whatever it takes to feel the music.

Meanwhile, I've queued up the Dutoit on Amazon Music (where it's free with Prime), and I'll listen to it a bit later.

Hi Ubertrout,

You are right, sorry for this. I was confused by the similar cover arts.

Anthony.

Thanks for your great review. I will order the other version soon enough and write a review when I find the time.
Looking forward to comparing both versions. The Planets is a work that one cant really get tired of hearing. It runs the gamut of feeling many different. emotions over the seven tracks.

Thanks to all who contributed commentary.

Cheers,
Analogue
