Any doubts that this disc might not live up to the standards set by the previous two volumes are banished in the opening few minutes of the Op. 7 sonata. This is another amazing performance by Brautigam, giving us Beethoven's piano music with artistry, not merely playing. If one ever doubts why one spends money and time collecting and listening to music on disc, this series is one of the reasons why.

No more quibbles about "sounding too much like it had been made in a church, which it was"?

I'm pleased to see vol. 1 has 10/10 and vol. 2 has 9/9 recommendations. I'll add this one to t'others, one cannot have too many fortepianos.

That was my complaint.

Indeed it was. I am curious to know how do you feel about the series now? Have you sworn off Brautigam or bought all three discs anyway? The ambience is indeed WARM....

I guess you didn't read the part of my reviews that were enthusiastic about the performances, threads about this cycle, and this very thread were I said MDT had back order my copy! ;)

I remembered your enthusiasm, hence "quibble" about resonance -- but you're right, I forgot that it was you who was backordered. I'll follow up on the threads at home this evening (yes I steal moments from the work-day to peek at the forum). I am glad that you and others are enjoying these discs and supporting the 'Forte-piano Market'; I love them (1 & 2, 3 on order).

It's all I do when I have to lurk on a conference call.

By the bye, your review which mentions as a virtual footnote, the "recorded in a church", is a most excellent and helpful review, a very model of enthusiasm tempered by minor reservations. Mea culpa, I should have qualified my use of the word "quibble" as "minor quibble".

The idiosyncracies of my own hearing lead me to bask in 'warm' recordings, but I know that other ears find such sound distracting. It may well be that close miking here is what overcomes Akiralx's previous reservations about 'tinkly' forte-pianos, because that closeness gives the instrument's sound a more powerful presence.

PS: You're back-ordered; I'm pre-ordered....
PPS: What time zone are you in? I'm Atlantic.
