Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Strange that I've not seen it listed on Amazon, e.t.c. ? Just found it...anyone purchased it ? Is it any good ? ( Is it an actual Universal HFPA branded disc ?

Just found it on ebay, showing HFPA branded box...don't know how this escaped me ? Looks like a European release, only ?

As I am new to this it looks like this has The Steve Wilson remix and is available in UK/Europe now but we in the States wait until Dec 9th.

Is that how things usually go?

There are some rumblings today over at Quadraphonic Forum (QQ) that Steve Wilson's name is NOW attached to Roxy Music's first album to be released early next year.

Fingers crossed!

Brett, I agree with Bob Clearmountain's assessment of the center channel wholeheartedly. A properly imaged set of stereo speakers portrays a very convincing phantom center. I have two systems with center channels and three without and in my main system the speakers are so large (4 6'2" speakers across the fronts) that even the manufacturer (Genesis) argued AGAINST even trying to put a center channel in between them. Dialogue is crystal clear and vocals are dead center and absolutely seamless.

And if you're going to utilize a center channel, it better match the left and right to a tee or else it won't be seamless.

The man knows what he's talking about.

Agreed.

Please don't misunderstand me. I love the man's work...including Avalon's 5.1 mix. We are just talking here, right? ;-)

My point was more about the development of multichannel over the past decade or so. That article was written in 2003...when 5.1 audio was still getting started. I didn't mean to single out Clearmountain for criticism or anything. On the contrary, I was very interested in his discussion of and insight into the use of the center channel. Over the years, you and I have listen to various 5.1 mixes. As you no doubtedly are aware, some mixes hardly use the center channel and just keep a 2-ch stereo front soundstage (relying mainly on the phantom center) with the rears adding surround. Perhaps with older recordings that were originally 2-ch stereo (which Avalon is) this approach could be justified. But... to me, this could also show a lack of appreciation for the center channel, which I feel is often the case. (To be clear, I don't feel this way with Clearmountain's mixes.) And you and he are correct that a phantom center can add a positive element to the sound image.

But as they say, there is more than one way to skin a cat...especially in 5.1. My general point was that... I feel that he and other recording engineers/producers have learned from their experiences in 5.1 and are developing sophisticated ways of creating a soundstage in 5.1 that utilizes MORE than just 2-ch stereo's phantom center. I definitely notice the benefits of this with opera and other large scale productions. Studio recorded pop/rock music is perhaps more difficult to have a clear point of reference. This, however, also allows more freedom in creating immersive surround mixes, which is something I find very exciting as well.

Anyway let me be clear, I am no expert. Clearmountain is a professional and has much more knowledge and experience. I respect his views and excellent work in the recording industry. I am certainly looking forward to Reckless and other recordings that he is involved with.

Brett, initially the center channel(s) were used for motion picture soundtracks for large movie venues where if one sat off axis to the screen, dialogue would be prioritized.

A good example of horrible use of center channel for music: the Rhino DVD~A of Randy Newman's Little Criminals where ONLY his vocals comes from the center channel. Very strange, indeed. Without the center, his vocals are seamlessly integrated into the front channels.
