re. symphony 4, i wonder what it means here by "original version"? that's a vexed issue.

(i also wonder whether this is 5.0 or not or SACD stereo).

Original version here probably means in its lighter-orchestrated original version. Schumann went back to #4 and gave into his tempations to do a lot of changing to the orchestration.

The chamber orchestra would indicate that this will be a recording that emphasizes the lighter textures of Schumann and will probably fit in with the Gardiner and Goodman sets and follow period instrumentation.

On the spot, flyingDutchman!
This is the first in a series of great Romantic works in a lighter setting, wholly according to period practise, but with modern instruments.
The infamous scherzo in Symphony No 2 is a marvel - first time I hear this music and actually enjoy it.

It is rbcd, SA-CD stereo and SA-CD 5.0, like basically all BIS SA-CD:s.

Enjoy - Robert

thanks, it's a definite purchase for me.

i think i'm right in saying that at the VERY earliest stage of the fourth symphony's conception a part for guitar was contemplated by schumann. now i don't believe i've ever heard a recording with THAT in it....

Let's hear more about this series - all Schumann or perhaps other contemporaries, like Brahms?

anybody got a UK release date for this issue? i await it impatiently - schumann 4 being one of my all-time favourite symphonies.

I don't know how I missed this but it looks very exciting! I played the original version of Schumann 4 back in college, and I've never been able to listen to the revised version without cringing a bit because it's so heavy in comparison. I'll be buying this as soon as it becomes available in the states!

Rest of Schumann, some Mendelssohn, some Schubert, and, who knows what else.

Best - Robert

It should be available latest in February. We have already sent the review copies there, and Select usually has a delay of about 2 months to release together with the reviews. If you can't wait, it has already been released in Germany at least.

Same thing. It should be available in February, but can already be found in most countries in Europe.

Best - Robert
