Discussion: Grieg: Olav Trygvason, Orchestral Songs - Ruud

This disc arrived three days ago and I think it is probably the best disc of the Bis Grieg/Ruud series so far.
The others discs have all been good, sometimes very good, but no one would pretend that every piece that Grieg wrote is entirely memorable - hence this excellent series inevitably suffers from having to include some works that are not particularly interesting.
Here though, every work is very fine and with excellent performances from all. The soloists, all good and committed, perform well, and although one might criticise some small points it would be mere nit-picking.
This is a very satisfying disc and well worth purchasing, even if you are not collecting the complete set.

By the way, does anyone know how many more discs there are in this series? I would have thought it is almost complete, but having listened to very little Grieg before this series, my impression of the extent of his output could be wrong.

Yes, this anyone does know.

The series, which is now finished, consists of 6 SACD:s of the Complete Orchestral Music, 8 if you include the Complete Peer Gynt on a double SACD.

BIS-SACD-1191, 1291, 1391, 1441/1442, 1491, 1531, 1591.

Happy listening - Robert

Robert, congratulations on completion of this series! I have happily purchased all of them, and recommend the series to all.

Ditto, - the Olav/songs disc is on its way to join the others. Congrats to BIS and bissie. B

Thanks, all.

If you like that orchestra, why not try for Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suites with them under their Chief Conductor, Andrew Litton, just released (SACD-1301). The unique thing about this is that the 3 Suites are mixed into each other, chronologically as the plot evolves. More to come!!

Best - Robert
