There is too much responsibilty to discharge in reviewing this, what with comparisons to the greats of yesteryear and the competition of today, so I will simply do a one line review and confine my comments to:

OH WOW! Buy it! This is amazing! ranging from high voltage to meltingly beautiful and back again! A superb recording of a magnificent performance. Thank you Julia, Thank you PentaTone!

You're sitting on the fence, Bruce. Now, do you like it or not? :-)

PS Mine's on order. Pentatones are released somewhat later in the UK.

Most reviews of the Tchaikovsky concerto don't state whether it incorporates the small performance cuts, or whether it is absolutely complete. From memory, on SACD the Isaac Stern and Heifetz have cuts, the Grumiaux on PentaTone is absolutely complete.

Does she do her own cadenza in the Tchaikovsky the way she did in the Mozart, which were very good indeed?

Not quite sure where there is a cadenza in this work?

Gosh, yes, in the first movement it's written out out, isn't it? Mmm, must've been thinking of the Brahms...

She plays the standard issue here and quite beautifully.

John Broggio (Polly Nomial) has just reviewed this and says everthing I would have said had I been able to find the words to say it with. Anyone who has resisted obtaining this because "it is yet another Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto recording" should read John's review. As his review suggests without saying so in so many words: as a display of virtuoso violin playing this is among the best there is, but as a display of outstanding musicianship, from the soloist, the conductor, and the orchestra, this one is peerless. It is all caught in wonderfully colorful, clear and "grab you by the seat of your pants" sound - a truly vivid recording.

Dear Windsurfer,

Thank you for adding your voice to the chorus of review approval for this amazing recording. It's not often that a performance of an overly-familiar warhorse comes as a revelation, but this certainly qualifies.

Differences of opinion concerning performance quality are to be expected and, to a degree, welcomed. But no one should be deterred from purchasing this disc by the rare naysayer. As you said in your review, "This disc was truly a revelation! Please - don't miss it!"

Where is the naysayer? I have read almost nothing but praise about this wonderful performance. Even Julien was positive, even if he didn´t went over the top like the rest of us.

Lawrence Hansen in the March/April 2007 issue of American Record Guide pans this recording ("...a competent but unexceptional run-through of the concerto." ...there are many superior recordings.") He didn't even like to sound much. I often agree with Hansen's assessments of recordings but not so in this case. I also wonder if he is really equipped to judge the sound quality appropriately. On the other hand, the other major American classical mag (Fanfare) has given it a top review for performance and sound (March/April issue).
