This is very interesting. The vinyl I have of this originated from a very early PCM recording from (looking at back cover) February 12-16, 1976. The SA-CD was apparently recorded February 12-20th, 1976 so it's unclear to me whether the SA-CD originates from the PCM recording used above or concurrent analogue tape. The new disc is also four channel. I'll have to get this just to satisfy my curiosity. I remember playing the LP many times.

Having been stung (although I know the Flyingdutchman disagrees) by really poor sound on my first Denon - the Smetana Ma Vlast - I will wait before purchasing to see what you think of the sound on this SACD. I really hope it is good because these are quartets I have been wanting on SACD for a long time!

The 1985(P) Denon CD* does not say 'DDD' anywhere, on jewel-box, booklet or disc. Given the date of the recording, my instinct tells me its ADD. If someone wants to dig deeper, the recording engineer is Stanislav Sýkora....

I'm moderately excited, and have pre-ordered it.

If the PCM recording was good enough for the LP, it would almost certainly have been used for the CD. Whether it's good enough for the new SA-CD is the question.

Doh! [Homer Simsonesque slap of forehead]

I was staring at the funny insignia in the upper right, thinking it was 'PcN' and something to do with Denon/Nippon Columbia.... But no, it is the disc's proud claim to the wonderful new 'PCM' technology.

Out of curiosity, I dusted off the ol' P3 and gave this a spin and the sound (to my now more critical ears) is pretty sterile. I then played Beethoven: Piano Trios Nos. 4, 5 & 7 - Beaux Arts Trio which is a transfer from an analogue recording from over a decade earlier and there's just no comparison. It's hard to believe now how everybody (or at least most, including Denon) got it so wrong.

BTW, these fifty transfers by Universal in Japan (/alltitles/336) are starting to disappear. I was thinking of buying up big and being able to retire on the profits in a few years.

Hey Zeus,
Let me know where you plan to retire on the future income you gain from these fifty releases. I'd like to retire there too!

I have number of early Denon PCM recordings, both in CD and LP formats, these are primarily chamber works featuring Smetana Quartet and trios performed with Josef Suk and friends.
General comment regarding the sound of these recordings, painfully dry and unpleasant sounding, performances are very fine.
