I'm curious. So here are a few questions:

1) They write this: "Import 96kHz/24bits WAV files, and keep the superb quality"; but also this: "You can choose the audio format from high quality (up to 6 hours PCM 48kHz/16bits)...". Does it mean that you will import 24bits WAV files, and not keep the superb quality since 16/48 is all the disc will allow you to keep? I don't understand.

2) If you really can make 24bit audio DVDs which are still not DVD-audio and are compatible with any DVD-video player, what kind of player will reproduce 24/96? DVD-audio compatible players only? I don't see the point.

Hi Julien,

I purchased this yesterday -

1) You can keep your 24/96 wav file quality and be limited to 2 hrs of disc time (that will be my choice) or get up to 6 hrs of disc time by using 16/48.

2) Part of the DVD specification is stereo 24/96 PCM. Therefore any, - I repeat - ANY DVD player will play your disc at 24/96.

A small firm named Classic Records here in the US took advantage of this by selling what they called DADs (Digital Audio Discs) to market remastered recordings from the analog era. They are not DVD-As. They play on my DVD player but not on my SACD player. My favorite of these is a disc of Bloch's Concerto Symphonique. But since I got so addicted to my mch sacd system I hardly ever listen to it anymore. Part of the reason for that is that the DVD player is upstairs with my small stereo system and the better system is downstairs where currently only the SACD player acts as a source.

BTW this software also allows you to make regular CDs. If it works as well as I think it will, I will consider it a quite a bargain.

I'm interested. Keep us informed!

I'm curious also to know if DVD-audio in stereo sounds better and why (supposing it's 24/96 too).

Not having a DVD-A player I will not be able to assess this but I would not think so. I would THINK the only advantage of DVD-A over DVD is getting multi-channel at 24/96.

It shouldn't matter -- 24/96 is 24/96, all other things being equal.

It should really come down to the player. DVD-Audio can only be played on DVD-Audio (and universal) players, whereas 24/96 DVD-V (such as my older version from Classic Records of I, Robot) can be run through an external DAC...and in my case, that is no small upgrade, as I only have the entry level DVD-A player, but I have a very nice external DAC.

John,

My soundcard supports 24/96 as does my recording software (Cool Edit). What I don't know is how to burn to DVD. I have a DVD burner and using Sonic MyDVD, I can burn TV shows to DVD - but I don't know what to do with just a wave file. Sonic's Help does not address that issue. What software do you use? Could you provide some guidance?

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

I have successfully paid-for and downloaded some Liszt piano music from Linn in hi-res FLAC format.

I have written this to DVD-A usuing Cirlinca's DVD-Audio Solo software. Solo accepts FLAC format directly and it's a simple matter of dragging and dropping the files you need to burn into a write list, and then 'burning' your DVD-A.

Solo also enables you to upsample red book CD and wrtite a DVD-A; this creates an interesting disc. I upsampled Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' to 96kHz/24 bit; this gives a very diferent quality to the sound so try it and see what you think.

Cirlinca offer their software on a try-before-you-buy deal where you can create 5 DVD-As for free. And small files don't count towards this total so you can practice on DVD-RW discs until you are confident with the process. It costs $34.95 (around 18 GBP) and they accept payment rhough Paypal for those who dont use a credit card. There are good 'get you started' guidelines too. I can't praise this product enough.... by the way, I don't have any links with Cirlinca, I am just a very satisfied customer - and Cirlinca's software is much less expensive than , say, Discwelder.

Have just paid for my next download from Linn (Mozarts' Requiem)- and I am looking forward to starting the downloads when I get home tonight.

Regards,

Derek
