Hi All

I am a new member here but have been looking at the site for quite a while to pick out good SACD albums to play on my new SACD setup. I have noticed that two of Alison Krauss Albums, Alison Krauss & Union Station Live, and New Favorite, are highly reccomended for quality of songs and sound. But when I try to buy them they are not available in SACD! I have tried Amazon, and Acustic Sounds both and they don't have them. My question is if the music is so great then why are these albums not available in SACD? must be a reason but it doesn't make any sense to me.

Thank You

TomP

Hi Tom. Isn't it ironic? There is a reason. (Disc 2, track 12). - Mark

i should agree.

i have turned to the maker recently:

i would like to know if you have any plan to release the sacd-s
Alison Krauss: Live
and
Alison Krauss + Union Station: New Favorite
again. (if the price for a used copy is about 100 usd it must be
worth releasing these recordings in sacd format again).

i also do not quite understand why you have not released
her new album
Alison Krauss: A Hundred Miles or More
in sacd format. sacd means sonic quality for music lovers.

the respond i got is not encouraging:

to tell you the truth, we have not done well with SACD's, even the live Alison
Krauss (despite the raves & kudos). Unfortunately too, we're not alone; the
place we were having them made went out of business and the only other place we
could find was in Germany, which became cost-prohibitive. At this point, all
Rounder SACD's are going out of print as we run out, with the exception of our
George Thorogood reissues which are dual CD / SACD only. I believe the
exhorbitant prices at Amazon & ebay are due to the interest of smaller number
of audiophiles (who have my sympathies!), but not the general public; I only
say this as sales were quite slow for these items when they were in print.

Sorry! It seems the current trend is toward lower fidelity (MP3's etc), but
hopefully the public will come around at some point.

This is almost the exact self same reply that I got from Rounder about a year ago, If you come across them check the sellers credentials carefully IF THEY ARE FROM DVD4MUSIC AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE Do a search on this site to see what other posters think of this company.

International purchases are not any more difficult than others. If you have got bitten by the SACD bug you will find yourself searching the internet far and wide for that hard to find disc especially rock and pop. Most people on this site buy from worldwide sites including Japan without any problems. It is best to go for a reputable seller. however because of the international nature of the internet overseas purchases may take longer to get to you patience is the watchword.

Asked the same question a couple years ago. Got the same response. I think also that Rounder is looking at larger volumes/market. Whereas SACD users are now a niche market. I don't think they are looking at 5,000, or even 10,000 copy run to be worth their while if most of it doesn't sell in a year. Even for a re-issue where all the work is complete. Perhaps someone should let them know there is the second (third?) plant in the Asian market, which may be a cheaper alternative to Germany.

Perhaps MOFI or Audio Fidelity would do a re-issue. Even if it was SACD only and not a hybrid. Or even better, a newer album!!

If the nearest SACD pressing plant is in Germany, am I to understand that SONY closed their US plant? Or, is this old news? But I hate to admit it: Rounder's reply was honest, straightforward and indicative of the current state of affairs in hi~rez music.....MP3 reared its UGLY little head, yet again!

I received this similar reply from Rounder this month:

"SACD sales have actually been declining for some time. When the place in the US where we had them made stopped making them, our only alternative was a place in Germany; unfortunately, this would raise the price on an already slow-selling format, and given the current state of the industry - declining sales, layoffs etc, mainly due to downloading and the decline of the CD format overall - the decision was made to no longer release our music on the SACD format.
Perhaps an audiophile label will come along and license titles for SACD release (ala Mobile Fidelity with vinyl), but very doubtful Rounder will be doing anything w/SACD in the future. Sorry, but not much choice..."

That being said I currently have the Alison Krauss and Union Station Live SACD BRAND NEW and SEALED for sale on ebay. Item# 180422315867

I thought there were two SACD plants in the US, the Sony/RCA plant in Terre Haute, IN and Crest National in California. Are they both closed? If so could it be the death of SACD in the USA?

You should make some big bucks on the Live Alison Krauss 2 SACD set, that is the best sounding of all of her SACDs and goes for the most money. I wish I had bought a case of them when they were in print.

I just ordered Beethoven's Nine symphonies, a 5-disc boxed set on the BIS label by Juntunen Vanska for $19.95...and they're imported to boot. Sorta makes one feel silly to pay hundreds of dollars for a 2 disc set no matter how collectable! Unless you plan to frame it! But in case you're interested, Amazon US has two sealed (and they specify SACD) for $123.99 and $125.00, repectively. I really don't mean to sound sarcastic, but I think of every sacd release as an endangered species as (1) they're made in relatively small batches for a world-wide market (2) the future of the 5"optical disc is itself endangered. Perhaps down the road, Analogue Productions or MoFi will issue the Alison Krause SACDs in updated technology for a fair price and then I will be willing to pay the price (hopefully, much less than OOP prices).

Kraus and Union Station live still available on vinyl - $60. I did buy the SACD when it came out, and it has spent as much time on my player as anything. If I didn't have the SACD, I would get the vinyl set.
