In my frustrating search between big name shops and mom n' pop places here in San Francisco for new cases to replace my cracked hi-rez recordings, I Googled it this morning and quickly found these guys:

http://www.sleevetown.com/

U.S. based, great prices and you get 2 1-cent "sample" cases with your first order!

Hope this helps some of you...

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks for the info. Thought I would let you know that I have actually ordered from Sleevetown with good results. One thing to keep in mind though - not all Super Jewel Boxes are designed alike. Specifically, I've found that there are at least two designs: one where the hinges are offset from the corners about 1/4" (which is what I received from Sleevetown) and another where the hinges are offset about 1/8", which is what I was trying to replace (e.g. the box on Alison Krauss Live). The two are not interchangeable due to the width of the cover art spine, which is specifically designed for each of the two sizes. Thus far, I have not been able to find a source for the boxes with the shorter offset.

Hmmmm, and it's a shame that neither reviews of the SACD nor the cases themselves reveal their dimensions (even in microscopic print)

I've got a Roxy Music, Steely Dan, Eric Johnson and Peter Gabriel hi-rez recording that I'm aiming to replace. Guess I'll just have to go on faith and hope it works. They have a return policy, but I would soooooo hate doing all that work for a piece of plastic, lol.

Cheers,

Dan

When I first ventured into sacd a little over a year ago, I purchase quite a few used sacds thru Amazon and noticed that a lot of the cases were cracked. I ordered 50 Super Jewel boxes from Sleeve city and discovered what you have already discussed...that the spines weren't fitting properly into the newly designed cases. Out of necessity, I folded back the spine and presto, they fit but like all purists was disappointed that the sacd logo and stereo/mch info and the side-panel info on the left side of the case was ommitted. I also purchased 100 MylarCD Resealable sleeves which are useful for the digi-pak sacds (for protection) and to keep my japanese SACD's with their overlay intact. They were very reasonable at $8 (this is last year).

That is odd. I ordered a sample case:

[1] SJB-STANDARD Super Jewel Box Standard (sample)

from Sleevetown and used it to replace my case for Alison Krauss + Union Station - Live. It worked perfectly. It looks like it is the 1/4" offset. Did they make multiple cases for this SACD?

I am in the same boat as far as finding DVD-Audio cases that have the smaller offset. I bought some of these and needed the smaller offset for those too. Why can't we have more standards?

For me, Roxy Music - Avalon and Peter Gabriel - So and Peter Gabriel - Car are all going to match the version you should get from Sleevetown. Steely Dan - Gaucho uses the slim offset on my case and won't work well if yours is the same.

The scoop on the narrow super jewel box [SJB] hinges vs. the wider ones is that the narrow ones came first, but proved too fragile and were replaced by the wider variety starting sometime in 2003.

In early 2007 I got into SACDs (and DVD-As, which saw the same change), and by mid-year I was looking for replacement SJBs. I exchanged emails with a pleasant woman in the Netherlands, where Super Jewel Box International is based, and ordered some SJB's up in both SACD and DVD-A size, asking particularly for the narrow hinges. I believe that they sent me some narrow hinge SJBs in the SACD size, but they were scraping the bottom of the narrow-hinge barrel then. SUPERB customer service, but after paying the shipping charges to the U.S. I have a fortune in these!

Anyway, so far as I know the narrow SJB cases are nowhere to be found these days. SJB cases do change out easily and I find myself saving the best narrow-hinge SJB parts for the most desirable disks... but I'm kinda nutty that way. Once in a while you will find a disc with the artwork trimmed for the wide hinges but in a narrow-hinge case (some Elton Johns for example). Bonus!

Dear Mark,

First of all, thank you very much for your interest in Super Jewel
Box!

As stated below, in 2003 we have introduced a (complete line of)
Super Jewel Box New Hinge products. The reason behind this change is a.o.
to make them stronger and at the same time being able to offer our
products at lower prices.

The old hinge products have remained available during a certain
transition period to enable our customers to gradually switch. Now
all our customers have switched, we no longer manufacture the Old Hinge
design. We do have a certain amount of Old Hinge Standard available
in our office, though we are very sorry to inform you that we do not
have any Old Hinge Plus left (not even 10....).

We apologize that we can not be of any help this time. If we can help you in any other way, please just ask us!

With kind regards,

JPC still stocks the narrow hinge SACD cases. You can find them here, however they don't come too cheap...

PentaTone still has some stock of empty boxes with the narrow hinges. They can be ordered for € 1,00 a piece plus actual shipping costs from our offices in the Netherlands to destination.
