What's a "Direct Cut", and how does this release differ from the earlier one by Exton (Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 etc - Philharmonia Orchestra/Ashkenazy)? Is this the same performance that is available on RBCD by Universal Classics?

The Decca recording has the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Exton the Philharmonia.

It might refer to an audiophile LP original which was recorded 'direct to disc', i.e. without intervening audio tape master(s): http://www.auldworks.com/AESDD/dd1.htm

Previous discussion of Exton's indecipherable explanation can be found here:/showthread/25630/26714/y#26714

Hmm, another attempt to achieve RWetmore's "truly transparent digital audio system ... that requires no filtering"? No doubt it sounds fantastic, but at $190.00, I think I'll content myself with Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 - RPO/Mackerras (which has nicer cover art...).

You're right. I was confused by the existence of a Universal release, by Deutsche Grammphon on the "Universal Classics" label, which uses the same recording found on the Decca. I have the Decca recording (which I've always liked actually, despite the poor estimation with which it is held by some critics).
