I was just wondering if anybody out there has some recommendations for good traditional Jazz SACDs-keeping in mind the following criteria:

-The Jazz has to be traditional;bluesy/swinging/ballads (Ray Brown/Gene Harris type Jazz)/no modern/no fusion

-studio recordings of trios and quartets preferred;feels more intimate/no orchestral Jazz

-The SACD has to be MC

-And I already own: Gene Harris'"At last" and "Listen Here!
Ray Brown's "Summer Wind" (I know this is live)
Bill Charlap's "Stardust"

So if anyone out there has any recommendations I would be grateful for any.

I think the sticking point is going to be your MC requirement. There is a lot of great traditional jazz out there but almost none of it is MC.

I suggest you go on the Concordmusic.com website and type in SACD and start stocking up since they have the titles you mentioned (in m/c) for $13.98 plus if you buy four the fifth is free and type in this code CMGW2 and get a further 10% discount (and orders over $50 are shipped free). Happy Holiday shopping! They have Telarc, Concord and Heads-up and some fantasy jazz titles (the latter are NOT multi-channel but all the concords, Telarcs (with few exceptions) and Heads-up are.

Thank you very much for the replies...I will check out the suggestions...if any other traditional Jazz fans out there remember any other titles and/or record companies... I would appreciate any more suggestions.

Happy Holidays

Hi Hawk,

I'm not very knowledgeable about jazz but since you're not getting many suggestions, let me throw out:

Bucky Pizzarelli: Swing Live (Chesky)... a live recording, but just incredible sounding and very "intimate". One of my favorite surround discs, and I have more than a few. There are some other MCH discs by Chesky that may be worth checking out, for example I have Phil Woods' "Here's to My Lady" which is decent as I recall.

Herbie Hancock: Gershwin's World (Verve) may not be traditional enough for you, but it's also a great MCH disc.

also, I'll second the Concord suggestion... most of the CMG discs I have wouldn't fit the definition of "traditional" but they are all good, and some are great. You can't go wrong with their current special -- order 5 or 10 of things that sound appealing and you're bound to be pleased.

PS: I have the Ray Brown disc too, it's not bad but just doesn't get spun much around here.

Any of the Fantasy jazz SACDs are very good. Also Take Five and Ah Um are terrific.

Again thanks for the recent suggestions-I hadn't thought of chesky recordings thinking they were mostly classical or something...I read the reviews of the Bucky Pizzarelli: Swing Live and I think I will definitely get it...the price from amazon uk from us sellers seems like a bargain.
