Has anyone bought this SACD? I just noticed it coming up in a search for the composer today.
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5, Romeo & Juliet - Gatti
I went to a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert with Daniele Gatti conducting Mahler 5...it was spectacular. I hope his Tchaikovsky interpretations are just as good!

I had a listen to the CD version at my dealer some time ago. I did like the vivid interpretation and good sound. Knowing that Harmonia Mundi is into SA-CD i did'nt buy the CD, hoping it would come out on SA-CD. I'm glad to hear it actually has.

Gatti is a very exciting conductor, but his Tchaikovsky (recorded at Abbey Road studios) got mixed reviews here in the UK. It is perhaps worth pointing out that the fill-up (Romeo) appeared on the Classic FM label as long ago as 1999.

I reveived the disc last night and gave a listen. I will be posting a review later but my initial thoughts were that it is impressive. The Romeo And Juliet couldn't have been a DSD recording, since it is from 1998, when multichannel was done using prototype recording equipment by Telarc! The 5th Symphony is impressive...but very fast paced, just like the Mahler 5 I saw with Gatti ant the BSO.

My review is now up. By the way, this is hybrid/multichannel. Zeus can you update it? Thanks!

As an OT addition for those who missed it from the new releases thread, Ivan Fischer and his Budapest Festival Orchestra are releasing Tchaikovsky's Fourth and R&J next month.
MDT are taking pre-orders for it at £9.75 which seems good value.

DVD4music are the WORST firm I have ever encountered on the web for SACDs .... they charge for SACDs they do not stock, which they can never obtain, and then when you complain ... they promise for months to refund ... Eventually I had to go to my credit card company and file a a complaint to get my money back.
Others here have reported the same problem. Avoid.

Canonical thanks for the warning, I too have heard bad things about DVD4music.
