Very interested in this release. I see it hasn't been released previously; anyone know if it was a DSD recording to being with this time?

Naxos? DSD? Aren't these the same people who predicted DataPlay would soon replace the CD?

It didn't get a particularly good review from "Gramophone".

What we want from JJ is more Elgar. I believe he is one of the greatest Elgarians around today, possibly THE greatest now. I am a regular subscriber to the NZSO concert series so I hear a lot of him live and I recently heard him conduct the Elgar 1st. What a stunning performance! I've also heard him conduct the "Enigma" Variations on two separate occasions and have not heard better performanes from anyone.

I perhaps should have mentioned that James Judd is the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra's Musical Director and -- for the record -- Matthias Bamert, a personal friend of JJ, is the orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor. I feel we are extremely lucky to have both men connected with our very fine orchestra and I've had many memorable experiences when either has been on the podium.

"Helped by vivid sound, James Judd conducts the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in glowing performances of these favourite Vaughan Williams works." - Gramophone August 2003.
The rest of the review is in the same vein.
I'll buy this and post.
Cheers
Nick

Yes, I must apologise, as I've just read the review again and it does get a very good review. How could I be critical of my orchestra and its Musical Director?

Actually, Nick, I don't envy those so-called "lucky sods" at all -- apart from perhaps the repertoire they get. When I say the NZSO plays as well as any orchestra I hear on disc, I really mean it. What I would like to hear more of, though, is music off the beaten track and while we did hear Liszt's "Faust" symphony at the penultimate concert of the year (the subscription season is over now and will begin again next March), and very well done it was by James Judd, it was given with the shortened orchestral ending; i.e. without the final tenor soloist and Chorus Mysticus which I consider one of the finest moments in the entire work. The woodwind playing, especially in the central "Gretchen" movement, was glorious.

Nevertheless, some years ago I was corresponding with a relative of mine in the UK and it seems that most of their orchestral concerts feature the usual diet of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky symphonies too, whereas one might have expected more Bax, Ireland, E. J. Moeran etc. When it comes to Holst it's ... yes, you've guessed correctly!

We'll get that Rugby World Cup back again next time! Go the All Blacks on their short northern tour starting very soon!

This SACD is no longer listed on Naxos's website. (Unless I'm blind.)

Pete
No worries re white stick but it is available on JPC website...like all the Naxos Sacds on special offer at 9.99 euros...The last item they promised Handel has never materialized so the email I received from them saying NO MORE SACDs or DVDAs seems true....
Pity the Prokofiev item on DVDA looked interesting....never made it to sacd (or did it) ?
Meanwhile Im still trying to get that Japanese orchestral one..only available Far East....Dave
